so my 8800GT died and i need a new graphics card, ive been using nvidia cards for years now but i hear ATI have gotten better in recent years where nvidia kinda went a bit shit, so whats actually good these days and how much is it gonna cost me? ive got a job now so i should be able to spend a couple hundred or so with my next paycheck

Sort of dependent on screen resolution really. If you're looking at 1920x1080 or higher then the 5850 pulls ahead by quite a distance, but if you're not at that res then go Nvidia GTX 460 1GB. It's probably the best bang for buck card going at the moment.

I have the GTX460 1GB and it is aces. I can run SC2 at ultra settings with no problem, and Crysis run brilliantly as well, even with AA on. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat runs amazingly well, and looks brilliant with Tessellation turned on.

screen resolution doesnt matter at the moment, but it will do not too long in the future so id rather get something now that can handle it rather than need to upgrade again in a couple months

Just a reseller. I've had xfx cards before and their build quality isn't quite as good so they tend to die marginally faster. Shame ATI cards still don't get longer warranties.

yeah thats kinda what i meant, are they a shoddy manufacturer. but has a 2 year warranty so it should be covered until the point i need a new card again so ill probably just nab that unless someone can find me pretty much the same price deal/better deal from a better reseller

I've used a few XFX cards, I'm even running one now. Never had a problem with them dying, then again, I don't OC mine.

Saying that, this new XFX 4890 has got a fucking loud stock fan on it, which'll get replaced ASAP, probably by this one (link is for my own benefit really).

i dont bother with overclocking so not really a problem for me, and fan noise never bothers me much so long as it does its job and keeps the card cool
