What happened to the market?

I have a few items I can't sell on the market anymore - mostly Sansha crystals - have they been removed from the game?
The Rev notes say something about items not in a market group not being tradeable, the obvious solution would be to auction them, but there's a problem there, too:
Minimum start price for public auctions is 1M, with a deposit of 100k. That's ludicrous for the items I'm used to dealing with - and the max length is only a week.
Maybe it's an isolated example with me having discontinued items in store, but if they're still valid, why weren't they deleted or converted, and how are people supposed to buy and sell them?
Can anyone explain what their thinking was on this one? I read the auction stuff was put in to help corporations, but a great aspect of the game has always been that you can get by just doing your own thing, if you wanted to.
