You know, it can't really go vapourware as it's up for pre-order as of 3 days ago. It'd be one hell of a job for their lawyers.

OK, I presume im missing something here, because it looks to me like a fairly bland space strategy game. What makes it potentially exciting?

Not missing much actually. It's a fairly bland space strategy game with a couple of interesting featurettes- coop multispak, custom designed ships, webbed research progress. Their approach does seem to more along the lines of building a game engine that's highly moddable than trying to produce a fully developed title though.
One of the (two) devs just tipped up on another-bland-space-spreadsheet forum I frequent and will answer any questions you may wish me to pass on.

How big does your ruler have to be in order to measure a star? Also, metric or imperial?
