Game Music Nostalgia

After clearing the user settings cache in Eve the other day the in game music popped up again which I've not heard for years. It took me straight back to those first days in Eve 5 years ago when I was knocking around in Frulegar with a fledgling 5punkorp, hauling trit for Wiggy's first battleship. It's surprisingly chill music for a ruthless pvp game and it certainly changed the tone when you're floating around with that on.

It got me thinking of all the other music that I can still remember bloody ages since I played the game but gives me a little nostalgic poke in the gut when I hear it again. Obviously the Red Alert theme tune stands on its own but there are snippets which have become indelibly burnt into our collective minds by repetitive, largely ignored background warbling while we clicked around the killing fields of our pixelated past.

Civ4 - the opening strands of the soundtrack. Bom bom, ooohh eeehh ooooh. If you don't know what I mean look up Civilisation 4 Meddly on Spotify. It actually a fine piece of music.

RA - can't not mention those marching feet.

THX - Totally weird one here none of you will remember. It was a Eurofighter sim that predated EF2000 and mostly terrible. The music however was very engaging and thinking about it takes me straight back to when games still came on floppy disks.

Which particular bit of game music does it for you?

Totally with you on the Civ IV music, also loved the music for Chuck Rock and Lemmings on the Amiga.
There's another bit I can hear in my head but I can't place it right now but once I do I'll put it here

I often listen to the entire EVE soundtrack when I need to concentrate on something. John Hallur's an ambient god.

The music of Thunder horse IV will forever remind me of sitting infront of a Mega Drive for hours on end.

And forever shall the melodies of AOE stay with me.

I think perhaps RTS music sticks with you so much because there's little other unique dialogue, you're just listening to sound effects and the background music for hours on hours. It almost puts you in the mood for the game ahead when you start a new map and a particular track starts up. Wonderful stuff.

And of course, nothing puts me in the mood for killing better than some Zerg rock.

I usually find it hard to get excited about other people's nostalgic music, but that's a fucking awesome menu tune.

And I don't know why but I always turned off the music when I got to Lavender town because found it horribly depressing.

Sounds like it's time for another Video Game Music Show. I will attempt to grab as much as possible and make a mix that has mostly new (to the mix that is) music.

Hush you cupcake, the whole idea was to cut out pretty much all the C&C stuff except Hell March to make way for different things.

One of the ones I always remember:

But possibly the one that sticks out properly is the hill recruitment music:

Something haunting about it. Gotta love Cannon Fodder for it though.

Cannon Fodder must never be remade.

(and of course the Armageddon version)

Ristar had too much good music to mention, so here's someone playing the first level.

And why did ice levels always have the best music?

This one takes me back to my first console, the Sega Master System II (the II is very important.)

And, of course, building that dream house only to have your inexperienced sims burn it to the ground as they try to cook pasta.

All of the sims build mode music is just lovely, i rate it as some of my favourite music, not just in games.
