More than likely, but I don't ever expect to play the multiplayer.

I will be!

That's a shame, its probably the best part. Especially with all the multiplayer mods (e.g. Phantom, defend the base, strip Jessica Alba etc etc)

Depends. I'll too only play singleplayer and I heard at least in some places it was subscription-based. I'm not paying much for two months of the sort of game I would play sporadically over the next few years. Hopefully it'll be the normal model here and the sub thing is just so they sell more than one copy each to China, Russia and Brazil.

I can say with 100% certainty I won't be buying it if you need to pay a subscription to play single player. I can't see it happening though, it'd be commercial suicide.
There's no point in me playing multiplayer. I didn't like Starcraft MP, I didn't like C&C MP, Red Alert 3, Supreme Commander, and almost every other RTS I've played. I'm just no good at them. I like to take my time and roll up the enemy, and multiplayer games aren't about that.

I wish I could be as excited about this game as many other gamers are, but the game type isn't really my thing. I tried DoW 2 recently and that seemed pretty good but I get lost and frustrated quite quickly. And that's supposed to be an RTS-lite.

There's no subscription. Wild rumour, I suspect.
Custom maps allow for all sorts of nonsense which aren't about build orders and rush-tactics.

I've so far been teamed up with people on my skill level, I believe they've been vying to make multiplayer more accessible.
In SCI people made maps where you had to avoid traps, solve murder mysteries, or use your doods as RPG characters.
WCIII spawned the DOTA craze, will be interesting to see what Starcraft map makers do with these tools.

That sounds interesting. In which case I might well play multiplayer games, as long as they don't resemble the base building tank/zerg rushing RTS multiplayer I've played before. With 5punkers, of course. I rather enjoyed the survival mode of DoWII.

I think they're on about introducing a subscription in poorer countries like Mexico and Brazil..

Quite cool, for those who like to play against other huminz. The game tries to put you with similarly ranked players.
You start off in a practice league and get to play five games of that to warm up and get your bearings. Everyone else you play against is also in the practice league, so skill levels are pretty much the same as this is the period in which both of you are looking at every building and saying.. "What does this do?"
After your practice league matches you're ready for placement. You get to play five placement games against people of various skill levels, both lower and higher than you. Looking at the games you've played, how successful or faily you were compared to people better/worse than you, you're placed in a league and a division.
There's Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
I got placed in Copper 90
I'll continue to play against randoms of various skill levels to get the chance to move up or down the league table - but it's nice to be able to have a massive list of those who are better or worse than you, and some sort of reference on their profile as to whether or not they're going to bumraep you before you press "Go".

This actually works quite well now. When I first got on to the beta test, it did not work at all, and I was getting bummed, utterly and totally, every time. I dont know what they did to change it, but its a lot better and matching you up now.

There needs to be a league below Copper. A Poo League in which I might compete. A special school sports-day league where everyone gets a medal.
Only 'very easy' AI was available when I played, and that was too hard for me - which might seem like an argument against me only playing it singleplayer - but the AI doesn't gloat, incredulously observe my ineptitude or score leaderboard points off me. Also I could team up with other AIs and go 3-on-1 without my allies complaining they were totally carrying me.
Perhaps I should revise my "Why can't we all be friends?" strategy.

Very Easy is still the only AI there, but sometimes it pays just to play with a buddy.
Tezz and I spent 30/40 minutes just building up through the tech trees and seeing what there was to play with, learning the ropes of the races without attacking each other (much.. Or at least not making to destroy one another).
It was fun, and that's how I originally learnt how to play competitively. We had "no-rush" rules that would give us a period of 30 minutes to build up and prepare ourselves for a battle, a time that gradually shrunk the more confident we became.

Problem with matchmaking is that it teams you against randoms, and I don't want to play against randoms. I get no enjoyment out of beating a retard, and even less from losing to one. I'd only want to play against friends, and the only outcome of that would be FJ and I endlessly and ineffectually battering ourselves against the other's defences.

Or you and I vs Grimmie and FJ. Even the skills up a bit. Not that we would win, as im not that great at SC either...

Okay, so remember I mentioned about custom maps, and that they're not all 1v1 slaughterfests?
Meet a remake of the classic SCI map "Sunken Defence", "Spine Crawler Defence".
