Favourite 5punk Mods

Post by friznit »

Browsing the news forums, I saw the must have mods thing and inevitably they're predominantly MP FPS stuff. I enjoy throwing mods at a game once I've run through it a couple of times. Quite often they improve the gameplay significantly, whether it's a small balancing mod, new toys or a total conversion. There are some very excellent modding communities out there but as with all things, not all mods are equal.

I thought it might be a nice idea to have a place where we can bung a link to any particularly good mods, or indeed sites, that we run across in gameplaying. Clearly this is aimed at the less popular, single player type games since the 5punky mainstream ones tend to be covered in their own thread (such as ArmA2).

I'll add links later if people think this is a good idea and doesn't fizzle immediately.

Empire Total War: DarthMod is awesome, and actually made the game good. Hopefully being ported to N:TW soon (see twcenter.com for more)

X3: Terran Conflict: masses of mods available at the egosoft site, and well documented too. The Xtended mod, a massive mod/addon for Reunion, is still currently being worked on for TC but is expected to be very shiny. Sadly none of the Star Wars ships have been ported to TC yet, and the old Star Wars Total Conversion died along with X2 (I kinda miss flying my SSD with 15 Tie Fighter wings against an armada of Nebulon B's).

Mount & Blade: Native Expansion is by far the best mod around (admittedly in my opinion). The Battlesizer is a must have too. Not sure if anything's been done for the recently released Warbands (so-called 'Standalone Expansion' aka 'We're charging full price for a multiplayer patch').

Every time someone mentions Oblivion I want to go and play it again.

We had a fantastical massive Oblivion Mod thread which really showcases the power people can have to change a game when developers release a development kit.

i was just about to find that thread and post it, coincidentally i reinstalled oblivion yesterday

edit: just had a look and most of the links seem to be dead, i expect if theres any left in the download page they wont be compatible with the current version, but going on the mod sites id expect it will be easy enough to find more up to date versions

looking on the mod forums i came across this http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/t ... -grabbing/ changes how grabbing items works so you can do stuff like steal jewlery or weapons by grabbing it off an unaware person, AI reacts differently, lets you slap people to challenge them to duels and such, sounds quite interesting

Making System Shock 2 happy on XP/Fista/Seven!

This doesn't change the gameplay, it just allows easy installation on current OS's. You can also set the screen resolution and adjust the FOV to whatever you choose, and it takes care of all the patches and updates.

Beyond that (after installing the Mod Manager at step 3), there are links at the top of the page to resources where you can find mods and fettles for other stuff.

Regarding Oblivion, I quite liked Pahncrd's Oblivion Enhanced. It's a massive collection of Oblivion mods, all re-touched to work together. If you are already comfortable with modding Oblivion it might not be for you because it is designed to work as a whole; taking stuff out or adding stuff can break it. But if you are lazy like me it adds absolutely shit-loads of stuff in one (relatively) easy to install package.

I've mentioned it before but Dear Esther is one of my favourite HL2 mods. And I've just tried another one by the same group: Korsakovia. It certainly is atmospheric and spooky, also more of a game than Dear Esther. But it found it got a bit annoying as you have things hassling you while you're trying to work out what you need to do or where to go.

I'd really like to try Dear Esther. Should I wait until what's-his-face has finished the graphical upgrade, or play it now and revel in the improvement?

I'd say wait for the overhaul, it looks like he's making good progress and there's no hurry. However it doesn't have a traditional story as such so spoilers are not really an issue. But I suspect it would be nice to see it (an hear it) in higher quality for the first time, the original does have that very dated HL2 look about it.

I have some new wallpapers: http://www.littlelostpoly.co.uk/devblog/?p=521

Final release is a standalone commerical game now isn't it? I remember some drama on ModDB about it.

That does seem to be the case. I'm happy to support it for a reasonable price though.
