After AVG decided they can't release working updates, and when used in conjunction with Zonealarm, they decided that bricking your internet connection is a good thing, I'm giving up and am prepared to pay for a decent AV.

What're the current recommendations? Is Nod32 still the AV of choice?

I'm just using the microsoft security essentials/windoze defender of w7. Hasn't failed so far and keeps out the way.

I still like nod32, not sure it's as good as it used to be, but cheeseandham still sells it, so it can't be too bad.

NOD32 seems to have been usurped by Kasperski recently, and that's the one I'd recommend. Anery runs it and doesn't seem to suffer any game related issues from it (although him being a cack-handed spazbeast is a different matter). NOD32 is still probably in the top 5 though, and it's working fine for me. Unfortunately you can't really claim you're virus free just because your scanner hasn't picked anything up, but it's unassuming and I've only had one false positive in about 3 years.

I have been using MSE on my laptop for a while now and it's rather good. I don't think I will be renewing my NOD32 sub when it runs out to be honest. NOD32 has had too many false positives for my tastes.

NOD32 is still the choice for my gaming PC as it's what I'm familiar with and it keeps out of the way, apart from the odd false positive deject mentioned. At least you know it's doing something I suppose.

Maybe I'll switch to the MS offerings on my media PC. The free Avast AV is on there at the moment, but if it's no better I might as well use MS's tools.

NOD32 isn't quite as good as it used to be, but I'm still selling it
Kapersky is well rated too.

I'm starting to go down the lines of not having an AV checking every file as it's a Waste Of Resources. Just put up with UAC, use a "non standard" browser (chrome or opera) or use Firefox and NoScript, being careful and use an on-demand scanner if you're really unsure about a particular new file.

Works for me, YMMV.

NOD has just chosen now to tell me it expireds in a week. Thanks for that (not as if I don't have enough to pay for this month). Are we still in the way of thinking that Kaspersky is in the top slot? If so I might give it a go.

I rebought nod this week, as it does the job just fine.

To be honest, Microsoft Security Essentials is as good or better than NOD32 and Kaspersky, and is 100% free if you can pass a WGA check. I let my NOD32 subscription run out and haven't looked back.

What deej said. I've used a few AV before and the standard MS program is as good as any of them imo.

Actually, I should remind everyone to make sure you've updated to Flash 10.1 - there's a nasty exploit going around. Affects Reader too but they haven't fixed that one yet.

use foxit for pdfs instead.

BTW you do know that a renewal is cheaper than "buying it again" (you have 3 months after expiry)
