Hey! Stop that, you've got it wrong: this is not Stalker by another name. In fact, it's not Stalker to the extent that, were you to say "Is this like Stalker?" to one of the ex-Stalker developers behind it, they'd probably punch you in the the nose, walk to the top of the nearest mountain and then scream in raw fury at the skies until someone shot them up with enough tranquilisers to knock out a blue whale. It's very determinedly
not like Stalker, and I can't imagine how many times the poor dears have had to bat away the same questions and presumptions. Metro 2033 is a post-apocalyptic shooter set in mutant-strewn modern Russian, but it's not open-world survival fantasy. It's a strictly linear first-person shooter, albeit with a touch of shopping and soaking up the atmosphere of civilian settlements in between dealing death to things that go bump in the subterranean perma-night. It's Half-Life, it's Bioshock, it's Call of Duty - it's anything but Stalker.

Hmm, I'm still wary. I was actually hoping it was going to be a bit more rpg and less linear shooter, buuuut I'd be happy to buy another good linear shooter.

I'd rather have a good atmospheric linear shooter, than another mediocre FPSRPG thing.

But by that same token I'd also rather have a good FPS/RPG over another mediocre FPS

Problem is, good FPSRPGs basically don't exist.

Apart from Deus Ex. And System Shock 2.

Exactly, they were 6 and 10 years ago, respectively.

Oblivion? Although I suppose that's an RPG/FPS (important distinction methinks), same for F3.

Also, not very good.

... in your opinion.
Fallout 3 might be my favourite game of recent years.

I think it's pretty much given that any post on any forum is in the poster's opinion. I don't just randomly say words.
I tried to like fallout, and oblivion, but I just couldn't get on with them.

I'm afraid I agree. I really wanted to like them both too, but I just found them utterly lukewarm.

I couldn't really get into oblivion, but liked fallout 3. To say it's the best game in years would be taking it very far though.

Just to add a bit more meat to the thread.
I don't rate the Stalker games much higher than oblivion/fallout 3.
Now, I love the stalker games, they're by far my favourite franchise of the last few years, but they're generally buggy and unfinished, which spoils them a lot. However, they are capable of holding my attention and giving me a world I look forward to exploring, which is what I found lacking in oblivion and fallout.

Fallout 3 - I am disappoint.
With oblivion I installed every super high res pack going and jizzed out my eyes at it all. Small niggles is the best I can complain about here, like there being an awful lot of twins/triplets etc in the city.
I think fo3 was just dystopian future oblivion. It was like playing a mod not a new game.
Russian stalker doom sounds like it's just going to do unsettling claustrophobia and shit your pants surprises. This is a good thing.

Facts can be presented on forums as well. Possibly a rare occurrence, but it can happen.
My opinion of Fallout 3 was presented as such. I'm certainly not saying it's generally considered the best game in years, just my personal favourite. I can understand why people wouldn't like the gloomy, oppressive atmosphere and collect-em-up game mechanic.

I really liked that, just not the gameplay being so open to fucking up randomly if you go to the wrong place too early or something (I'm not quite sure what happened, but it put me right off by ruining the previous 4 or so hours I'd sank into doing not much)

Strangely enough the thing that annoyed me most about Fallout3 was that it was actually a heavily disguised linear game. Oblivion was much more 'free', but just got horribly repetitive. STALKER was an ace game world (only played the first one mind) and although it was semi-linear it at least gave you the option of choosing sides...then got retardly hard towards the end.
