Simple question from a simple mind.

Does the DVI output on my GPU also output sound so I can connect it to my TV via HDMI.

Thought i would ask before I buy a 20m HDMI cable.

On my card, you can connect a sound cable from souncard/motherboard and run a HDMI with sound out of it.

Without knowing what your GPU is we can't know, although it's a good bet it doesn't handle sound itself. But it may have a sound pass-through option from your sound hardware using SPDIF, like Ty describes. So if you have HDMI output on your GPU that should handle both video and sound. I don't believe DVI can carry sound, if you were thinking of a DVI -> HDMI cable or adapter.

Or you could just use a separate cable(s) for the sound, if the TV has the inputs.

So If I enable SPDIF as my output, that'll send the sound out the GPU DVI > HDMI ?

The ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series plus patch sound into the DVI, which when connected with an HDMI adapter will send sound to the TV. Test it with a cable you have already before buying the long one.

I assume the SPDIF cable has to be connected to the video card, though.

Can't you borrow one, or find a cheap short one in the supermarket? Without trying it's hard to guess.

With my TV, the analogue audio inputs only work with the VGA video input selected, so if I had a silent HDMI input, I'd have no way to connect the audio. If you can change your TV's audio input source independantly of the video input source, it's less of a gamble.

Looks as though you'll have to set that as your audio playback device in Windows.

Still sounds to me like you need the actual HDMI connector. I have dvi - hdmi for my monitor but I can't figure out how to get sound out of it. Then again I haven't honestly looked too hard.

With the ATi sound over hdmi connection, if you'll pay attention to the back of it you'll notice the card has a HDMI connector, which is the socket you have to use if you want sound as well (ie, you can't convert from a DVI, but why would you if the card already has a HDMI socket). I should know, I have a 4850.

I'd suggest you do a google as well, I think there's a couple of threads over on the [H] forums about it, and from what I remember it was a mixed view due to some confusion, and don't forget that the drivers are seperate from your actual Display Drivers, there's some special ones lurking on the ATi website somewhere, that flumoxed me for a while when I was trying to disable it.

It sounds like your card may output audio via one of the DVI ports, but I suspect you're going to need to use a DVI->HDMI adapter that came with the card.

Haha, how odd. Mine does have the HDMI port, although mine isn't an ASUS card

Well. I 've managed to do it but not via HDMI. It turns out you need the ATI adaptor that comes with the GPU, as standard "off the shelf" DVI-HDMI adaptors don't transmit sound and mine is in storage 3000 miles away !

So I decided to give the Windows Media Player to PS3 streaming thing a blast. Fuck me it's Brill. No Extra cables and can stream full 1080p Movies with full Dolby HD sound.

And to top it off the PSP's remote play feature lets you access the same files from anywhere in the world.

I love Technologies !

Maybe I'll try that. Especially as the OS disk in my media PC died yesterday and 1080i/p never played on it anyway.
