5punky Scores

I've just had a thought, don't know how feasible it is. Indulge me while I follow my train of thought a little;
5punkers trust other 5punkers' opinions on games. Sometimes we write reviews, but often we can't be arsed and at any rate it's only one person's opinion. So, what would be a better gauge (at a glance at least) of 5punky opinion on a game would be a metascore system. On the back of that we could have a part of the site with a list of games and their metascores, and expand it to films etc. It could also tie in to a system where you could enter games you own into your profile so you could score games you own, and so you could see what games someone has or conversely see how many 5punkers have a particular game.
It doesn't sound like much more than a database with a front end to me and so to my uneducated mind sounds fairly simple. However, as usual, I'm not the one who would be doing all the work. Seems like a good way to expand the 5punk 'brand' past the forums though.

On the simple side wouldn't that just be a poll on a forum thread (one per film/game) with options of say 1-5 (or 1-10) and registered users can then vote on that thread giving their score?
The poll will reflect a simple score (i.e. most people give it 4/5 with a few 3/5 and 5/5)

I was thinking outside the forum, but that's not a bad idea.

The idea's good, and it would look a lot better outside the forum. Also, it should have a metacritics-style score display with a quote from each rating 5punker. I was thinking along the lines of something like...
Dog Pants [1]/[5] "Fucking bollocks."
The underlying system could actually be pretty simple, one sql database a master table listing all entries (games/movies/whatever), plus one table for each entry simply listing the username, score and whatever else we put in there. I'd guess the same sql server the forum uses could handle it without significant additional pressure. Averages can be simply calculated while querying the scored, but they could also be inserted into the master table.

This ^
From it you could create lists that you could felcher, and as Bali says a little critique. Sometimes you just want to scan a list of games and see what you fancy, like in Steam.

Now obviously, while this all sounds like an excellent idea, I'm pretty sure we'll all forget about it in a few days.

Exactly, which is why I'm a fan of the KISS approach. It means that Stoat doesn't have to work on something that people will use a few times and then forget about.
If by some miracle it does have legs and everyone gets into it, there'll be an incentive for whoever to program it and do a minor piece of fettling to move the reviews to a new system (and knowing it'll be used afterwards)
And you can still vote 3/5 and then put a forum post up saying
"I scored 3/5 , very mediocre" and still the scores are tallied above.

In fact, you have a reviews section already with a game/film per thread.
Why not try it out - existing reviews can have their first post editted to add the score.
I'll do a test one.

Fair point. I'm a stubborn bastard who would code it myself if I could, but it's unfair to ask Stoat to put effort into every whimsical idea I have. Not that I was doing that, it was just a suggestion, but you know what I mean. I just like the idea of expanding the site outside the forum.

Me too, all I'm saying "good idea, why not try it in-house first"

I see you're doing just that with Batman

I can do the backend stuff, but I'll probably need someone's cooperation who knows the SQL server's details. Oh, and someone who tells me how it should look.

I don't think its possible with phpBB, but it'd be nice to have a Topic with only polls not just the first post and no comments.

You can get creaky old phpbb2 from
phpbbhacks, which should give you a good enough starting point. Wrap your backend in that and you've got a solid session/database/templating system.

I'll run up a suggestion for how I picture it when I can drag myself away from the heroine-like Torchlight.

A'ight I'll see what I can do. Meanwhile, are we using a standard MySQL 4/5 server as a database?
EDIT: Nevermind. We probably are
