IGN have recently made an interesting article on the future of gaming with Windows Fista.
They are introducing a "Games For Windows" standard, and the games to include
Code: Select all
* Games Explorer support
* Parental controls
* Compatibility with the Xbox 360 controller (where applicable)
* Widescreen support
* 64-bit processor support
* Multi-core and multi-threading support
* Media Center support (Premium and Ultimate Fista packages ship with Media Center)
To read the article in full click the image above, looks like there is some interesting stuff being introduced with Fista and PC gaming that I wasn't aware of.

it certainly does look good. it could push lesser developers to stop making games, or it could make games a lot better

I imagine MS have learned a lot and grown more confident in the gaming market with their Xbox platforms, an area they have total control of so can do things purely on their own terms. My concern is that they will try to enforce absolute control on the PC market also, one that should be more open in my opinion. The increase in games played on Linux and Mac platforms should not be sidelined and the introduction of radically new hardware like the PhysX chip is something that can only happen on the PC platform and it can serve as a proof of concept environment that can only benefit future, fixed hardware console platforms.
Although the only evidence I have seen that indicates this is the direction MS are working towards is the possible inclusion of DRM hardware on Fista compatible motherboards. But I'm sure MS will be taking steps to tackle the problem of piracy their Windows OS which, lets be honest, is rampant.
Rant summary: I fear Fista and I don't trust Microsoft.

The only reasons I will likely be moving to Fista are:
1. .Net framework. (The development and debug tools)
2. Games don't work on Linux (well not the good ones.) Frozen-Bubble anyone?
If I could I would move to Ubuntu / Mandriva (workstations) and Debian (servers).
At risk of sending this thread of topic, I will end with:
Fista does seem like it is introducing some cracking new graphics and gaming technologies. It is just a shame it is not open-standard stuff. I too do not trust Microsoft and will not be installing any DRM hardware or such. This is not becuase I

microsoft software - it is becuase I control my PC, and I sure as hell am not letting Mircosoft(/others) dictate what I can and can't do on my own PC.
