I know that like me, a couple of other bummers on here use AVG and probably will be using V.9.

If you've noticed your computer minimising recently like I have, it's the fault of AVG.

Or you can do a full uninstall and reinstall from their latest installer.

I thought it was about time AVG was poked fun at again, like last time when it was flagging a file (punkbuster? or steam related?) as malware.

The fix? surely that's buying not shite AV?

I suppose it's like airbags too. People can get a false sense of security. It's amazing how many people say to me "I've not got any anti-virus software, and I've never had a virus" or "AVG's the best AV out there - mine's never had a virus". When in actual fact they're riddled, but have never detected any.

I have this argument with idiots a lot, and have found it to be the case with infected machines, AVG sitting there saying everything's fine, when other, AVs pick up a massive heap of problems and deal with them.

Virus checkers are no excuse for not being sensible in the first place though, and it's now one of the reasons why I won't fix peoples' machines unless they pay me in gold.

I don't like wading though tonnes of utter shit applications, mostly adware style when they've been to websites and just clicked "YES!1!" to everthing to figure out which one has broken it or is causing grief.

Virus checkers can only protect against so much, stupidity is not one of them, but even AVG is useful to stop the older ones sneaking in when they piggy back on other stuff.

This sort of thing is why I gave up on free solutions for my gaming desktop and paid up for NOD32. It really isn't expensive, and it's consistently one of the top 5 or so anti-virus programs.

True. I virus scanner only stops malware, it doesn't prevent you installing stupid things yourself. User education can be very effective if you can get them to actually listen and understand.

Also, proper machine setup is essential, give the machine everything it needs to play anything legit on the internet, then train the user not to install anything, because it's probably evil.

edit: Tell a lie, my old Uni PC has one. It's so full of dust I doubt it works though.

I still use floppy drives occasionally.

Mostly because I haven't put a copy of memtest on USB and all my machines still have floppy drives.

I do. I errrrrrrrrrrr... "accidentally" broke the panel covering the slot for the floppy drive on my computer case, so I dug up an old floppy drive and slapped it in there. Not sure if there's a slot for it on my mobo though.

I wasn`t aware AVG was that bad, what free AV stuff do people recommened `cos I`m skint at the min and can`t afford to pay for 1
