Earn something for your Achievements.

You login to UPlay in the game (not many games available at the moment though, Assassins Creed 2, and Splinter Cell Conviction & R.U.S.E. will be added) and when you complete certain bits or do a certain action, you get UPoints. Which you can spend on Unlocks.

I think its a good idea :D

Why don't they just put the achievement unlocks in the game in the first place

Good point. Hmmmm, maybe this is a bad idea...

Although it does mean they can add Free DLC's through the service at a later point.
