Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising appears. Unless it slips again. But presuming it doesn't, you can finally find out whether it's better or worse than ARMA 2 on October 9th. In the meantime there's a new video that apparently demonstrates the head-to-head multiplayer mode, showing how you can take control of either a USMC or Chinese PLA troop and then shoot helicopters out of the sky. There's also a new collection of screenshots.

I don't know anything about this game, but if it's lies somewhere between the arcade style of CoD and the serious style of that of recent simulation type shooter then colour me interested.

I just did some looking about this, not confirmed yet, but doesn't bode well.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising does not support standalone servers I'm afraid. The multiplayer game is peer to peer only.
It is not possible to join games already in progress in any game mode.
We are unable to confirm any plans for dedicated server support unfortunately.
Also, apparently up to 16v16 proper mode (though rumours say this might be 4 humans + bots)
4 player coop, no join in progress. [/code]

Wow.
It's bad.
For a start, it has the 80 menu screens you expect when playing a console port, and the interface to match.
Then I went into the campaign, figuring it'd have some level of tutorial.
It does, in the manner of Press the sprint button to run faster, doesn't actually bother to tell you what the sprint button is.
Then you sprint, apparently, OFP2 sprinting reminded me of
lots of head bobbing and puffing and panting, and going at the speed of a fat bloke jogging.
Combat didn't seem much better, I think they borrowed the recoil from DOD:S.
Then I got shot a bit, while healing myself, I was told how to heal myself, which reset my self-healing, and nearly made me bleed out.
I'd suggest sweeping it, it's interesting in the same way one guy, one jar is.

Just got hold of a copy and played through the first mission. Initial impression was "brown", but once I'd worked out which of the three WP #1's on the map was the first objective it wasn't so bad. AI is typically dim, although it was nice to see suppressive fire actually working. It's also good to see AI crew members swap to the gunner seat if the gunner dies (swap = magically reappear on the gun, which was disconcerting to begin with because I thought the gunner kept coming back to life).
Some animations are well done, but others are terrible or missing altogether - driver's legs sticking out of the floor made me think of the Flintstones and despite promises by Codewasters the magic helicopter boarding teleport is still in effect. As Berk pointed out, the head bobbing is pretty bad but it's not exactly game breaking. Inside buildings (CQB) works well, which will hopefully make for some fun later on in the campaign. Voice acting is refreshingly convincing in a Hollywood sort of way.
Other than being an irritatingly obvious console port (they even refer to the XBox controller in the tutorial tips), complete with 1 Button Interface and exploding barrels (yep, they clearly couldn't resist the fucking exploding barrels), it looks like it could be fun for a while. The lack of an editor and limited multiplayer options will probably limit longevity though.
There, a complete mini review without at single comparison to ArmA2.

So is it an FPS or a walking simulator?
I played the first one quite a bit, but not sure I have the patience for it now, a console-ised version makes me think it will be more immediate. The box art suggests something between console CoD and a Tom Clancy release - dunno how the fans of those will react to it (they're normally precisely what my brother-in-law would go for).
I only played the first ArmA for about 15 minutes and nothing I've heard about the new one makes me want to try it.
I also disliked DoD in both its incarnations - realistic weapon inaccuracy is all well and good, but when you can't shoot a wall where your cursor is aiming from 1 foot away then the game engine is taking the piss. Every other cupcake's gun seemed to work fine on me, though.
All these titles I was guardedly looking forward to, hoping I could find some RPG-like immersion in them - but that can't happen if I'm screaming at an idiotic interface. Also, I'm practising at carefully selecting games instead of just buying everything, because I won't be able to do that soon.

Here's the confusing thing: there was no first one. The sequel to Operation Flashpoint was ArmA (which was shit) and this was followed up by ArmA2, which I must say I'm really enjoying (admittedly helped a great deal by a third party rpg-ish 'mission' (war) that takes me, berk and a few others several days to complete) - see other thread for ArmA chat though.
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is the Codemaster rip off, turned into a FPS console game and ported back to PC. So to answer your question, it's much more of an FPS and will probably appeal to those who enjoy CoD or the Raven Shield stuff. It would be much better to compare it to CoD Modern than Armed Assault I think.

Well I played a game that was
called Operation Flashpoint, which at the time was a refreshingly realistic take on the FPS genre, given most of the other shooters of the time basically involved you charging in guns blazing unless there was a tank or something in which case you might have to hide behind a bush or shrub for a few seconds before continuing. It was still quite forgiving though, and you could occasionally luck out with banzai tactics.
ArmA to me was nothing like this. It was mercilessly unforgiving, but also rewarded much more the use of other weapons of war, such vehicles like helicopters and stuff. And was massively more complicated.
I get what you're saying though, so it's perhaps foolish to compare it to the first game that shared that name, indeed I hear the original makers aren't best pleased with the use of the name. I guess it needs a demo, really.

This.
More accurately (from what I saw), it's Tom Clancy meets cod, with a small amount of walking sim.
Also worth knowing is AmaA2 is more like OFP1 than it is ArmA in gameplay terms. I can't quite place it, but I hated ArmA with a passion, OFP1 and ArmA2 I rather like, despite its oddities.

Hrm. Unless a demo is forthcoming, I think I'll buy the PS3 version for my brother-in-law's birthday - oddly the day before mine. I'm fairly sure he'll like given what you've said - his thing is realistic settings, not space aliens and shit, rather than realism and he has every MoH, CoD and Tom Clancy title from the PS2 on. That way I get to see if I like, too.

Pretty much. A few niggles from me in terms of gun sights, shuffly run, bit consoley in areas and like Friz said all the shiny brown (try turning post processing effects down) but at the same time I quite enjoyed the time I spent in the first mission, then burnout arrived.

It's weird seeing you guys get exicted about a game people like me and Tezz warbled on about nearly two years ago.
