Remarkably high requirements there, given the recommended spec is usually the one that results in a playable game.

Well it is shiny.
Hopefully if they're citing dual core then proper multi-core threading is enabled and a quad core will be of more use in this.
Are they the first to cite dual core? Didn't soup come?

I'm certainly upgrading less often than I was in the late 90s. I seem to only do a major upgrade every couple of years now, and very little inbetween.

But that's not completely unreasonable, it'd cost what, about £400 excluding screen to chuck that spec together? I think the gaymes industry is learning slowly. It seems 5punkers and possibly the wider gaming community is spending less on machines these days. Or maybe I'm just colouring it with my current situation.
Less than £400 these days I reckon.
I don't think the industry is learning so much, but I think the hardware we have now is so advanced and bleeding edge that they're struggling to make massive performance leaps.
Certainly all of my upgrades since I first built the Gonk (end of 2006) have been pretty small steps;
CPU: E6600 > Q6600 > Q6600 G0
GPU: 7900GT (old then) > 8800GTX > 4870X2
Occasional ram upgrades, steady HDD upgrades and that's it.

I should be able to manage that, but time will have to tell, for some reason my machine is struggling enough as it is, even though it shouldn't.

I think it's more a level of processor. I've seen specs which say 3.2GHz P4
or 2Ghz dual core as an equivalent, so 2.4GHz dual is just the next step up from there.
But to say that any quad core will outperform those duals, it must do something with them, or that's just a lie.
