An RTS for a RTS n00b

So Company of Heroes has wetted my appetite for a bit of RTS but it's not got offline at the moment. Which would be a good one for someone who hasn't played properly since before Red Alert? Preferrably not too complicated or in a fantasy setting but I could probably cope if the best one is Warcraft 3 or something. Also has to be good offline.

I thought Generals was well put together.

I tend to prefer full 3D ones now, rather than the WarCraft3-style fixed isometric view.
Empire Earth II was quite fun, and since I utterly suck at them, it is good to be able to meddle with the timelines and have my nuclear strikes and big stompy robots up against the CPU's spear-chucking cave-dwellers.
The Microsoft ones are generally good, too and Rome: Scrotal War is good but a bit fiddly - but my favourites are the console ones like Crusaders and Kessen.

I like the look of Generals, it's not too old and is probably like the RTSs I played years ago.

I'm an RTS luddite too. The few that I've enjoyed and played for any amount of time are Starcraft (definitely still worth playing) and Ground Control. In fact any of the Blizzard ones are probably a good bet because it's their style to make the single-player storylines interesting.

Age of Empires III is rather good.

generals/zero hour is really simple to learn. It relies on the standard "get money, build shit, kill other guy" method.

still though, single player was fun

I'd recommend any of the C&C series. All have their good and bad points. Personally I think Generals is one of the worst appart from it is the best one to play mutliplayer. As easy as it is to EA bash, they took it from Westwood and fucked it up (it didn't even have any generals in it until the expansion pack - typical EA money grabbing tossers). It somehow just doesn't feel right. And they bastardised the storyline and the non-cgi videos were great post-generals.
And Tanya was hot.
The RTS I am really waiting for now is this:
Supreme Commander
The day it is released I have one of my best mates I lived with at uni coming over for the day and nothing but this game planned. Oh and a visit to the Pub and some point.

I just don't know where my disk is. Think I might have left it at Profs at the lan, but tad late now.

I'd have to put a nod in for Rome Scrotal War. I played that for a week of afternoons after college (Yeah, my teachers got a bit pissy for lack of homework that week). The single player campaign is good fun

It occurs to me that I bought Darwinia about a year ago and that overwhelmed me (or should that be overbelmed?). Not a traditional RTS but pretty much the same thing I think. Did anyone else give it a go?
