Is this a decent gaming laptop? Perhaps with an upgrade of 2gb?

All depends on how good an 8200m is really. (I don't know) but I suspect not very.

I have an Asus X59SL-AP338C (the ATI flavour of the asus you posted, has a 3470) which is pretty good, but I wouldn't really consider it a gaming laptop, it's more a laptop that you can play some games on.

Tell me what you'd like tested on it, and I'll test them later.

For general gaming, I'd suggest a PC every time, but if you're being pussywhipped, find a good gaming laptop, then point out it'd be much cheaper to buy/keep the PC. :)

It really does depend on what you want to play. If you're thinking dow 2, starcraft 2, diablo 3, most fps's out now etc then in my opinion you're looking at an outlay of about 800 quid to get them going in anything other than ugly if at all.

If it's a case of portability then a netbook/small lightweight lappy for wandering around the house and a desk rig for actual gaming is easily the best way.

Good Idea :D

Well, I'm really mulling over getting a gaming laptop to do everything on, or getting an EeePC/notebook of some flavour for surfing/coding/(possibly) video editing and doing just gaming on the PC

I'd spend a few hundred quid on something SWMBO can use for youtube, general surfing etc, it'll please her and keep her quiet when you're gaming.

Just out of interest, could you test BF2 and COD4 if you have the time?

If you want a gaming Laptop, Try one like this. You may need to sell some of your internal organs, to pay for it but nevermind !!!

haha, 1 star for portability, 1 star for battery and a high noise rating. so it's basically just a desktop computer.

That's pretty much what I use my laptop for, a replacement desktop when I'm away somewhere I can't take my desktop.

BF2, 1024x768, high settings, 4xAA is fine, might need AA lowered slightly for lots of action, will test better when I've found a network cable

Cod4... well, it works.

SP is stuttery and not great, fairly low settings, no AA. MP isn't gonna be any better, put it that way.

To be honest, it's as I expected, the GPU is a last gen mobile offering, so not particularly powerful, but enough to handle Fista and basic games.
