Every time I try to log on it says Gaim.exe has encountered a problem etc. I've tried re-installing it and even tried installing an older, non beta version. Same problem

I'll give trillian a try, but I don't understand what broke gaim, and why reinstalling it doesn't fix it.

I ran into that problem yesterday myself.
I don't know what this issue is, as i haven't done anything to my GAIM instuallation or anything out of the ordinary. Luckily the thing is fired up now and I'll just keep it on all day

I went from Trillian to GAIM. There's too much added shit in trillian.

What is this "added shit" you speak of? As far as I can tell, Trillian just does it's job without any fuss.

I use Trillian Pro at work, everyone else uses Yahoo and I believe this makes me better than them.
I find it ok, very lean compared to the official clients and nothing unnecessary as far as I can tell. I tried Gaim years ago so don't really know what it's like now.

trillian 2 can be a bit bulky in places.
trillian 3 does all you want it to, no more, no less.
yes, it does take 10 mins to set up, but it doesn't waste power on a shiny gui, or webcam shit unless you enable it.

does nobody just use the bog standard messengers? yes its ugly, yes it uses cpu, but if it makes that much of a difference to a game then just turn it off. personaly i feel its a case of over-geek-ism. if it aint broke, etc etc

I use XFire and nothing else really. I only ever had two contacts in Messenger and they're at work, so I run it there, simply for
"what are we doing for lunch?" messages over the three sites we're based at. Email, telephones and text messages seem to work well enough for my other communication requirements.

This 'till it bleeds.
I haven't touched an IM for years, I don't even like having X-Fire running unless I am ready to play a game.
I might just be an old, anti-social twat but I have everyone I want to talk to on my phone/email.

Well, at the time I was using it, I got fed up with the complecation it put into evertying. The added emoticons that would pop up even if you were just typing, the pain in the ass account management, the constant nag messages it would pop up all the damned time telling me how I should "upgrade" after logging some random amount of hours, and file transfers as well as stuff that was copy and pasted between Trillian and other clients NEVER WORKED.
The whole program seemed to concentrate on being ultra spiffy looking and trying to features as much crap as they could possibly throw in there. I mean, I remember reading about people playing little games and shit in Trillian pro (yes, I know I wouldn't have to install it, but it's still retarded, IMO).
All I want is to IM straight back and forth as simply as possible and GAIM was straight to the point, no bullshit and everything did what I needed it to do. I haven't used Trillian in a matter of years, but I have no reason to since Gaim is doing everything i need it to do already.
but everyone's story is different, but that's why I left Trillian for Gaim.

fix'd
It's more a matter of necessity for me - wife and best mate not in the right country atm, so it's nice to be easily contactable.

My main problem with GAIM is the interface ws obviously designed my computer nerds who have no idea how to make something asthetically pleasing. It is ugly man.
The emoticon thing is still there, but you can turn it off (which I do immediately), but the account management really couldn't be much simpler. And there isn't any nagware in it anymore.
but oh well, suit yourself!

It is partly this but also more convenient to have one application for multiple IM accounts. Plus no adverts

Do file transfers to/from official yahoo clients work okay in Gaim then? If so I might give it a go as it's the one thing that's annoying me about Trillian.

I find GAIM to be the best looking client out there. I prefer simplicity an minimalism, theres no need to have crappy gradients all over the place and huge shiny buttons, it all just annoys me. Its the same reason I'm using the classic Windows skin
