I want a netbook. I have no reason or excuse for this want, I just.. Do.
Something small, wireless, light and portable, clear screen, cheap.

I don't really know what's out there, or what I should be looking for.

Netbooks are going the wrong way. They started small and lovely, but they're getting bigger and bigger.
I'd quite like a Vaio P but it's hilariously expensive.
I'm still holding out for a Pandora, though not any time soon.

The Samsung NC10 is the latest netbook that everyone one wanking themselves silly over. Prior to that it was the Asus Eeeeeeeepc and then the MSI Wind. I'd read up on those.

I have an Eee PC 1000H and it's brilliant. Frankly less than 10" is too small for me (twss) as I have rather large hands and typing even on mine can be hard at times. Also, with such small screens, learning to work on them takes a bit of adjusting. Otherwise, they're great for watching ripped DVDs or writing code and other such light computing activities. Hardware-wise most of them are going to be mostly the same: 1.6GHz Atom CPU, Intel 945G chipset, Wi-Fi, your choice of pathetically small SSD or regular laptop hard drive (hint: go with a HDD). I'd say choose the one you get based on design and extra bits more than anything else actually. Mine has Wi-Fi n, bluetooth, and multi-touch touchpad action, which is awesome since the buttons on pretty much all netbooks are weak at best.

Am I right in thinking that the SSD option doesn't deliver much of a speed increase of HDD?

IIRC, the shitty SSDs in netbooks are slower than HDDs, but they'll take a fucking beating and are cheaper than HDDs, which is why they get used in netbooks.

Power consumption is about equal I think.

Dell Mini 9 is very good.

You are correct Tezzum. I took mine back as the headphone jack broke on it but because I didn't really need it anymore I took a credit note instead.

I hope they didn't tell you the only thing they could give you was a credit note. Because that would have been a big fat lie.

It's great. Depending on what processor/power saving settings it's on, you can have it working away for 4-6 hours.
The keyboard is very easy to master if you're a touch-typer like me.

I spotted Tesco have the Acer A110 N270 1GB 16GB 8.9" XP for £199, which is the cheapest I've seen a non-linux one.

Toys R Us have them on display and I had a quick mash around on them before getting accosted by an assistant in less time than it took to open Paint and select a magenta brush - I couldn't see myself using one for any length of time.

16GB seems pretty measly to me, I might just fork out for a laptop as size/weight doesn't really bother me and the extra HD space would be of much use to me.

My Eee PC is definitely very traditional notebook-like, it has the 160GB hard drive and an almost full size keyboard. I don't think I could live with anything smaller to be honest. It's just small enough to work anywhere, but big enough to use for hours if I want to.

What version is that?
