Well, given Deject brought this to my attention again.
Download
The folding @ home client.
In short, it eats spare CPU cycles, to do stuff, which will help cure bad shit.
IT WILL NOT affect your gaming*, it runs really low priority, so should not cause any problems. (and can be stopped if it does)
Just to make it fun, we have made a
Team - Whoever ranks highest (last day of each month) gets 500 5perm. - Just put your 5punk username in (for ease of recognition) and put your team in as 51199
*if you use the console version, the gui version can make stuff fuck up.

Done.
I used to do SETI waaaay back when ...
With two cores to play with hopefully I might be of some use.
edit: It seems it might not be as straightfoward as simply running it and hoping it picks up both cores, bah.

also, if you use the console version and install it as a service you can close the annoying window, then start the service using
Code: Select all
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > then start the service called FAH@*install location*

Dunno. I think it just tried to use 150% of mine and so promptly died, taking the system with it.
Sorry, scientists, you're getting no help from me.

If I actually get around to joining the 5punk group and switching from Seti to Folding I'll exclude myself from the competition, as it potentially runs on 500+ workstations at work.

I have the same figures. Just waiting to see how quickly the next frame goes and whether or not that effects the WU completion forecast, it does seem a bit long.
I am trying to read their FAQ and wiki but it's fucking baffling to quite honest.

I've run this in the past and also
this on and off. I'll install it again.
edit: woo! My beef hours have finally overtaken my CSS hours on xfire

Reet-o
After following
this thread I have managed to get it running fine and dandy.
If you run the console version you set max cpu and mem usage during the setup.

I'm just using the screensaver option that comes with the GUI, I don't like the idea of it running all the time.

You can knock up a simple batch file that will start and stop the console version without having to poke around in Task Manager, to start:
Code: Select all
CALL NET START "FAH@C:+Program Files (x86)+FoldingAtHome+Fold1+FAH504-Console.exe"
To stop:
Code: Select all
CALL NET STOP "FAH@C:+Program Files (x86)+FoldingAtHome+Fold1+FAH504-Console.exe"
Just substitute my path for yours and you are good to go.

Thanks, I'm giving it a whirl on my work laptop. Not sure what benefit this has over the screensaver option though and running all the time may cause me some problems on this under-powered laptop. Manually starting a stopping it is a bit of a pain in the arse.

I now appreciate the reasons to avoid the GUI version after spending 30 minutes trying to work out why CoD2 kept minimising at startup last night. Killing FAH fixed it.

... and the console version makes better use of cpu power by not drawing pretty images.

I have a few Linux/Solaris servers which are idle most of the time but unfortunately they don't have access to the Internet.

Any more for this?
Doesn't hurt your computer, does good sciency stuff and you get a huge karma boost
Doesn't even matter if you don't keep your puter on all the time, it auto resumes with no problems.
Hell, i'll even throw in 500 5perm for anyone who completes 5 work units.
