Unobtrusive and will just sit in the background with minimal touching required. Preferably free.

AVG is still king of the free Windows virus checkers.

Avast is my usual recommendation for freeware Antivirus. I'm trying out Clamwin at the moment though because I can stick it on a USB drive.

The new Norton security package is supposedly completely brand new from the ground up and it's supposed to be not not crap.

NOD32 It's Free to Download, update and there is an endless amount of PW's and Keys availabe. I've had it for months, not a single problem.

Avast chokes with large numbers of TCP connections (ie: news leeching) but it's good for casual use. You might have to manually re-activate yearly though, even though it's free.

Mine keeps bringing up this dialog that I have 1 day left till reactivation. I've been getting that for fucking 6 months.

Few people seem to know about Comodo. www.comodo.com

Their antivirus is now combined with the firewall, but you can disable that if needed, along with "defense +" which is a data exectution prevention tool.

With those elements disabled, there are no popups - even during updates. Only a virus will trigger a message. Uses minimal resources too. I find it good enough to leave active during gaming too.
