What games out there are really good for just sititng away and mindlessly chugging away at something? I'm looking for something that I can do on my own and just go. Any suggestions?

Do you have lots of time to kill or something? In prision?
For FPSs I'd say: FEAR, Prey, Quake 4
Or Psychonauts FTW!

Oblivion!
The Movies.
An RTS with a decent storyline.

A great many suggestions.
Depends: What flavour of game do you want; RTS, FPS, management, adventure? Do you want one thats deep and interesting or fun but frivolous? Do third person camera angles bug you? Does it have to be new, or is old ok? if it can be old, how old? Any particular setting (ie world war 2, sword and sorcery etc) particularly grape your squildo? Brain challenging puzzles or cracking action? Do you want to sink your game time into it in multi-hour long sessions, or lots and lots of little bursts of play? Does it have to include killing people? Does it have to be a popular game, or can it be one you have probably never even heard of? Can we entice you to try games that you may, at first, scream in horror at the thought of? Are we talking floor or bought? if floor, is there a maximum size? if bought, is there a maximum difficulty to get hold of level?
answer these

and I shall pick one of the many squillion games i have played that will suit you more.
Or just say "anything" and I will subject you to a random pick of something I like. But on your own head be it.

Mindlessly chugging away?
Just clicking away with a bit of thought:
Dungeon Siege, Diablo
Watching the scenarios play themselves out, occasionally making a change:
Sims, Restaurant Empire, Full Spectrum Warrior, The Movies
Pressing a button to proceed, occasionally making a selection:
Final Fantasy, Pokémon, Legends of Arcadia
Something with a bit more to the controls, but not too brain taxing either, but which has a lot to do/unlock:
One of the "big" driving games, the GTA games, Shenmue
I'm not saying these are fantastic games, just ones I enjoy playing to relax and not really use my brain very much.

Ice mining. Talk about mindless chugging away

Then again I'm often drawn back to Op Flashpoint for my kill fix, or R:TW for my strategy stuff. Most FPS I find dull and repetetive - go here, shoot this guy, rince and repeat - they're all basically the same. For that matter, most RTS are the same too. For really old sweep uppable, try Fallout 2. That rocked. Melty gun ftw!

Anything goes.
Joose wrote:Do you want one thats deep and interesting or fun but frivolous?
Either works.
Joose wrote:Do third person camera angles bug you?
Nope.
Joose wrote:Does it have to be new, or is old ok? if it can be old, how old?
I really don't care, but I'll draw an arbitrary line at 2002.
Joose wrote:Any particular setting (ie world war 2, sword and sorcery etc) particularly grape your squildo?
Any setting is fine.
Joose wrote:Brain challenging puzzles or cracking action?
Either or.
Joose wrote:Do you want to sink your game time into it in multi-hour long sessions, or lots and lots of little bursts of play?
I'm happy with either.
Joose wrote:Does it have to include killing people?
No. I can't, but I don't have to kill people in a game to enjoy it.
Joose wrote:Does it have to be a popular game, or can it be one you have probably never even heard of?
As long as it's fun, I don't care.
Joose wrote:Can we entice you to try games that you may, at first, scream in horror at the thought of?
I'm not sure what you're getting at with this, but anything goes.
Joose wrote:Are we talking floor or bought? if floor, is there a maximum size? if bought, is there a maximum difficulty to get hold of level?
Anything goes here as well.

Pffft. So basically you don't care
I'd second Diablo and Fallout 2. Both games sucked away vast tracts of my time over the years. And Civ X (I enjoyed 2 the most).

well, ignoring the 2002 cut-off (as i cant be bothered to look up dates), heres my suggestions:
I would heartily recommend Fallout 2 as one of the best (if not *the*best) RPG's I have ever played. Any game where you can be forced into a shotgun wedding only to end up pimping your wife off for extra bucks, or where you can become an internationally famous porn star, has got to be good. The fact that its an RPG that does not include Elves or Magic is a bloody big bonus.
Diablo is kinda fun, but I got bored after a while. There is a limit to how fun a game that essentially boils down to how fast you can click can be.
The Civ games are Win. Personally, I think 3 is the best, but 4's also good.
The Movies pissed me off. for a game often touted for how flexable the movie creation bit is, its not that flexable. Also, playing the game properly, I never found *time* to make fun films, what with all the pissing around keeping actors happy and buying new stuff.
The NOLF series is high on the list of best FPS's ever. They are fairly competant shooters, but also are
actually funny. Not just computer game funny.
on the adventure front: the Longest Journey (the first one. The second one is a bit wet) is quite deep and nicely written (if a bit dodgily voice acted), or if you prefer teh funnies, go for Grim Fandango. Brilliance.

Code: Select all
Glottis: Manny, until now we scraped along the ground like rats, but from now on, we soar. Like eagles. Yeah. LIKE EAGLES... ON... POGO STICKS!
i would have to agree
if your looking for pick up and play style racing games, then pretty much anything from the burnout franchise is good. i was playing the first ps2 version of that the other day. its crazy fun foo

The dead whale from H2G2 had be giggling and the hilarious references to other franchises like Star Wars where brilliant. Darn, despite it's age I might have to fire it up and play it again, sam. Also in this genre, I thoroughly enjoyed Arcanum: Magic and Steamworks something or other. These games had stuff in them as standard which are still being heralded as 'revolutionary' in games released now.

This is why I love 5punk. If someone else asked this question on one of the many gaming forums on the net, all you'd get is zomg u must play CSS its teh BOMB! etc...
Instead there are a list of nearly 50 suggestions for games, all with some sort of explanation as to why they were suggested in the first place.
Good stuff

This gives me a thought. Maybe we should have some great big list of "Gaems U shud plai", listing off games we think are good and brief explanations why. Not reviews, just single lines.
A bit like that bit in PC Gamer, where they list the top three games of each genre. Sort of.

Good idea
Should be made into a little article and posted in the game reviews forum, something a bit different to a review but quite magazine like, like Joose's mini MMONG review thingy
