Woo - I got a 2:1 in my degree.

Was hoping for a First, but I can't complain too much. Keen to get my transcript back though, cos if I was borderline for a First I may appeal - fuckers haven't given a First on my course for 5 years running now.

How is everyone else doing in their assessments this year?

Well I've got to go in to Uni on Wed to 'Discuss your transcript of marks for semester two, referral tasks and your progression.'

Fuck all ideas what this means but I'm guessing they would've told me if I wasn't gonna make it into my second year. At least that's what I'm hoping.

Well done though mate, you're stronger than me - I couldn't resist the lure of Oblivion and it may have reflected badly on my Uni career. Only my first year though and my new Girlf is starting the same Uni in Sept so that's encouragement enough! I'm hoping that me being a 'mature' (pfft!) student, coupled with my marks so far will reflect better on me. Roll on September!

I found out the other day I've passed my first year, not much of an acheivement as it doesn't actually count for my degree.

Aye, passed my first year with Bs, Cs and Ds, this does count towards my degree apparently so As all the way next year...

Woo though, my mate said he'd pay for a night out for me should I pass my first year. He doesn't seem too confident in me apparently!

I haven't got a clue what masters, grade, 2:1 etc... is but well done anyway!

Actually could someone explain in simple terms what grades and stuff you get when passing stuff at University, as someone recently bought cakes here at work, as they had "past their Masters", and I blankly looked at him, congratulated him for god knows what, and then ate all teh CAEK!

Excuse my ignorance, I just never went to University (thank god).

Right, first off, you go to university and do a degree (for instance, mine was a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Aka: Fucking worthless, but thats another matter). You degree is given a mark. These are a first (the bestest), a 2:1, a 2:2, or a third (shitest). You can then go on and do more work in the same field, and get a Masters degree in it.

Basically, people with firsts are either brainy or very hard workers. Most normal people get a 2:1 if they work, or a 2:2 if they are lazy (like me). If they get a third, they are either stupid or did no work. People with masters degrees are either really brainy, slightly wierd or institutionalised from spending all their life at uni.

Or a mix of those.

EDIT: oh, for further confusion, the first year generally doesnt count for shit, final mark wise. If you pass, you stay. If you fail, you get booted out.

Unless you are like my mate at uni, who repeatedly failed his first year, then sidestepped into a different course.

Most of the jobs I interview people for are specialised technical roles, which require practical experience, but having a degree is not valueless as it demonstrates an ability to learn and to self-motivate to some extent.

Despite us being a University, people with Masters or Firsts are viewed with a little bit of doubt, as they are sometimes indicate a more scholarly candidate who would be less likely to muck in with the team.

I always thought a Douglas Hurd was something entirely different.

Oh yeah, to confuse things a bit more, I got an ordinary degree (as opposed to an Hons), which doesn't have a grade.

True, however; if you are just starting out in the job world, having a degree but no experience will get you fuck all. When you *have* experience, then having a degree as well is definately a Good Thing™

2.1? Very nice sir! I've just finished my first year of Uni. However, the first year doesn't count towards the overall grade, so it's either pass or fail..

This, I do get a bit fed up of hearing people say a degree counts for nothing, too much of an easy throwaway comment.

And whether experience or qualifications are more important depends on the job/industry.

I got me one of them too and I can raise the confusion level as I didn't get honours but did do a disertation

Went and looked at southampton University yesterday, slightly small chances, but any of you guys been there, or got any opinions? Or even better, anybody studied Electronic Engineering and want to share their experiences?

I've and HND and a B.Eng in electronic engineering. Lots of maths, of which at degree level contains only Greek letters, some circuit design, most of which is also maths (with numbers this time though), some programming in my case, although I don't know if that's standard, and some practical work that was actually quite interesting.

If you're good at maths you'll be okay. I'm not and I passed on the strength of my final project and the fact that I charmed the professors when I presented it As an example, our maths professor filled one side of his whiteboard, flipped it, filled that side, flipped it again and looks baffled as to why there was writing on it. That was all the same formula he was working on.
