The death of PC gaming is soon approaching folks with the 360 being a big success, just wait till the PS3 comes out as well. If their online stuff is any good (unlike the PS2 effort), online PC gaming will gradually fade out.

No need to preach to the converted, I am a PC man (no not politically correct), but we need to think about all those games being developed on the console, and hardly any of them being released on the PC anymore like they used to.

as ever, i'll end up buying the console with the best racing game once it's easy to chip.

i mostly prefer PC rpgs (apart from zelda) and rarely play other games.

and as far as any console only FPS games (i'm looking at you cod3) fuck them, pc FTW.

Personally I doubt that, there's space for everyone on the world wide intercom. It may even be a benefit for PC gamers if there competition on the market for online gaming, perhaps it will even mean cheaper PCs and hardware components to combat draw of online console gaming.

I think the worrying thing is that the list of great games that Berk mentioned above, have all been in devlopment for years, and I'm concerned over the lack of news of any game devlopers now "starting" to develop PC games.

It may be an unecessary worry, and for all I know there are tonnes of developers out there all starting new games that will run on the PC, but I haven't heard much on the magical gaming grape vine.

I'm not worried. There's a lot of things that just can't be done as well on the consoles (FPSs, RTSs, RPGs, probably some more TLAs), and I reckon (I've no evidence to back this up) that most innovations are made on the PC. Casual gamers will often have a PC for other things, and so play (older) PC games. Hardcore PC gamers like ourselves will never give up our rigs in place of a console. The console market is definately getting bigger, but that's because the whole gaming market is. I don't think it's making the PC market shrink, it's just that the console market's growing faster because it's more widely appealing to non-technically minded. After all, PCs are high maintenence as we all know.
I'm getting off on a tangent myself now so I'll shut up and let someone shoot me down...

If PC gaming as an industry dies off, I'll keep playing BF2 for years and years then.

the PC gaming industry will never die, for one good reason. (and a couple of less good ones)

Modding -

Half Life got Counter Strike and Day of Defeat, both made by modders (who later got jobs at valve) (see: CS:S and DOD:S)

BattleField 1942 got Desert Combat - Those guys got absorbed by dice and BEEF was the outcome.


Also, should they care enough, people can go all out and build their own games for the PC, and you don't have to fuck about hacking stuff to play them.

It's pretty much impossible to make console games from home, whereas PC games are infinitely easier. Even if the larger bits of the PC game industry die, there'll always be indie games made.

PC will be better in my mind for some types games because;

Ease of Use: most games don't need a CD to run (or, there's a way around it if need be) so I can just open steam or click a icon to start running the game. Better then constantly switching discs on a console.

Online playabilitly: People spend more times on their PC, then they do with their console switched on, so If I want to play a game online, i'm more likely to find people with a PC then a console. Whenever I've tried to play a console game on the internet, i've literally found 5 people at the most in a server room (The the game in context is still quite new, sells well and there's not been a update ie Fifa 2005 then Fifa 2006, of the same game just yet). With lesser known PC games, I can find shit loads of people online still playing it. Good example is Delta horse, Black Hawk down. Shit game, but there was tonnes playing it.

Another factor with online games on the Console is that some games only allow me to play in the UK or Europe server, meaning I can't play with america and the rest of the world, which I quite like doing.

FPS: Keyboard, 'nuff said.

Mods: Again, nuff said but I doubt sony would let you mod games on a PS3, even if it does have a hard drive. Also I imagine it would be a lot harder/expensive to code and mod on a PS3.

Game types: Some games a better on a console, Racing, some RPGs, Beat 'em ups, etc and some are better on a PC, FPS, RTS, some RPGS etc etc.

So, I don't think we'll see the PC get wiped out. I just think Consoles will slowly become PC's, allowing whatever opperating system you want on their and loads more use of a keyboard.

I question the "success of the 360", not just because I don't have one, but because most gamers I know don't feel there are enough games worth buying to run on it, particularly those who already have a decent PC.

By Christmas it's likely the PS3 will be in competition, future "big" 360-exclusive releases are likely to be Halo 3, Fable 2 and Forza 2, against the PS3-only Driver 5, Gran Turismo HD, Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, Tekken 6 and Devil May Cry 4.
Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty 3, Resident Evil 5 are set for both platforms, along with a few other PC conversions, and if a game is out on PC, that is always the one I buy. (except GTA)

For me, that's a straight fight between Forza/Fable and GranTurismo/FinalFantasy as the premier driving games and console-defining RPGs are my only must-haves. Out of those four the only one likely to get a PC conversion is Fable.

I'll have to upgrade my PC soon, and even if the comparision above didn't swing it, I know I'll be buying a PS3, simply because that's where all the Japanese RPGs I'm such a sucker for will hit.

So maybe I'll buy a 360 eventually, but unless something drastic happens like FFXIII actually the same as FFXII or GTHD being HD-only it's still at the bottom of my shopping list.

I'll probably wait and see if Halo3 brings a price drop, otherwise I won't bother with the 360 for a while longer. PlayStation 3 seems to be planning to interest me as much as its older brothers: not at all.
However- I plan to get my hands on my first Nintendo console as soon as I can.

Edit: Worryingly, Zelda: Twiglet Princess is slated for dual GCN/Wii release in November, doubtless it will slip again, but as I have it on pre-order, I hope I'm not hosing myself.
