Loco Roco made me buy a PSP and I have a (hopefully) pre-patch copy of GTA on the way which will allow me to run emulators, homebrew and other unauthorised apps which a h4x-sploit. Is anyone else doing this and what are you using it for? I need some inspiration for nice things that I can do.

Mr. Bobbins is the man to ask for this, I have yet to ask him about the GTA-running of homebrew, dag namit!

Code: Select all
At this time the only real working Sony PSP emulator for playing PSP UMD ISO files is the one made by Sony itself. Surprised? Don't be - it was made purely for game development purposes and is distributed together with the Software Development Package. The problem is - to download or use it you have to be one of the Sony licensed game developers and have a contract with them. So far nobody has broken the rules of contract and released the emulator to the public btu who knows - miracles happen.
The emulator that we have seen in SONY press releases and used in press conferences runs on PC and can play games (psp roms) at full speed. Plus it has debugger that that devers couldn't live without.
apparerently

I believe that to play Loco Roco you must upgrade the PSP firmware to v2.7, it'll come on the disc and may or may not do it automatically.
I know the demo of Loco Roco requires 2.7 but not sure about the game
EDIT: It seems you can play Loco Roco on a v2.5 or v2.6 without having to update to v2.7, anyone got it and tried it yet?
Now you CANNOT play homebrew or run emulators on 2.7. On a 2.5 or 2.6 you can using the GTA:LCS method (eboot loader)
This is the website of the guy who writes the GTA method stuff

His website for the eboot loader

Another good site

I looked into all of this, and decided it's more hassle than it's worth.

NEVAAAAAAR!!
ahem..
The only thing I really do is run a SNES emulator, and I would give up homebrew and upgrade if there was a game I really wanted that required it. This is sure to come some time soon so I'll enjoy Zelda on my PSP while I can.

I thought that's where you got him from, I saw him there before he appeared here. I thought he might be from a SCUMM game.
I can confirm that the full Loco Roco game requires you to upgrade to 2.60 but the demo requires 2.7x.
Part of the reason for me buying a PSP was that I wanted to play with the emulators. Me playing R-Type on PSP = pig in shit. I don't know if this is actually possible yet as I'm waiting for my memory stick and GTA game before I look into it.

For 2.5 or 2.6 download this autoinstaller:
http://files.fanjita.org/psp/eloader097_nocache.exe
Just connect your PSP to the PC, then double-click this file, and follow the instructions to install the loader to your memory stick
Installing SNES Emulator:
http://psp-homebrew.eu/version.php?download&id=592
Upzip and put the unpatched version 's9xtyl' folder into \PSP\GAME\ on the memory stick
Make a 'ROMS' folder in the 's9xtyl' folder and stick the legally obtained ROMS in it
http://www.planetemu.net/index.php?section=roms&dat=300
Load up GTA go to load game, select the Eboot loader instead of a saved game, the eboot menu comes up, select SNES9X emulator, run it, have fun etc.

It all sounds rather a minefield, since I probably won't be in the market for a PSP until October, it seems likely I'll miss out on all the emulated stuff until someone comes up with a permanent workaround. I haven't looked into DS emulation much, but at least I have an unmodified original "in the bank" as it were.
From what I can gather:
- Homebrew works up to firmware v2.6 only, and is tricky on anything over 2.01
- 2.7 fixes the GTA exploit, which was the last known way to use eLoader
- The LocoRoco demo required 2.7
- Some games such as LocoRoco and Me & My Katamari require 2.6 and include the firmware upgrade
- There is no way to downgrade
- A patched version of GTA has been released, without the exploit. It is only recognisable when inserting the disk - it contains an upgrade to 2.6, rather than 2.0
It's difficult to know what to do - do I buy a copy of GTA now, so that I have the version with the exploit - only to find that when I do buy a PSP it has (or upcoming new games require) 2.7+ ?
I guess not, I'd be buying one primarily for it's own games, of which there are currently two that interest me, any emulation would just be an added bonus were it possible.

ZOMG PSP HACKS NEWS
A developer known as hitchhikr of "hitchhikr SoftWorks" and coder companion Neural have come out with a Proof of Concept of a 2.50/2.60 Firmware Exploit! Once implemented and fine tuned for "normal user" use,
this will bring 2.50 and 2.60 Firmware up to the same homebrew capability that 1.50 PSP owners enjoy with FULL kernel mode access - although Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories will still be required, just like with eLoader.

I now have my copy GTA (pre-patch) from a very helpful person on eBay and already got PC Engine emulator and R-Type working, w00t! I did have to pay £23 for it though and you can buy it on play.com for £15 (presumably patched) so it's not a cheap option.
Thanks for the links, etc. Mr Bobbins, they were of great help to get me started. I may donate some 5perm (inevitable jokes GO!)
And FatherJack I wouldn't worry too much about what you can and can't do with whatever firmware. By the time you get a PSP the situation would probably have changed completely and it sounds like, from what Bobbins has posted, that I'll be able to run floorware, if I wanted to, which I don't. Given time I reckon anything Sony do to stop homebrew/emulation will be circumvented.

dis
I wouldn't worry about it until you have your PSP, I didn't get mine for the emulators/homebrew, it's just a nice bonus, I'd get the PSP and then check if you can do it.
Unless you are buying it for this purpose in which case you might need to get a second hand PSP (No idea what version they are in shops now) and an old copy of GTA, but you won't be able to run future games without upgrading the firmware and (potentially) losing the homebrew
I'm sure you'd still able to pick up a 2nd hand copy of GTA in the future anyway, even if it doesn't work, it's an awesome game!
Also, YAY for 5permy donations!

What firmware was it on originally when you got it?

Was on 2.50, then upgraded to 2.60, now on 1.50. I can probably provide some assistance if you want to give it a go yourself, but the work was mostly done by a mate who has been doing this since the PSP came out.
It's worth bearing in mind that you wont be able to run newer games off the UMD if you do downgrade, but there are ways around that if you have a big memory stick.
[edit]
Easy downgrader
