L4D stuff.

Right then, Due to the way L4D is gonna work, it'll be a complete and utter bastard to host, especially given I suspect a
lot of us are gonna buy this.
So, we has a poll, and a question, so I know what to do when the time comes.
There are two gameplay modes currently in Left 4 Dead. A Co-op Survival mode and another mode called Versus. 'Survival' is Co-op only, with no Human controlled Infected at all, while 'Versus' allows players to control the Boss-Infected as well.
Would you prefer co-op (4 humans), or versus(4 human, 4 zombie) servers?
I'm expecting we'll want some of each, but the words from this will help me decide how to start.

Co-op and versus are basically the same gamemodes, so I think this will all depend on the amount of people playing.
(Versus is Co-op with 4 out of 5 bosses controlled by players)

Indeed, but if no-one gives a fuck about playing as a zombie, I'd rather not bother running versus servers.

I'd have to play both before being able to say which I'd prefer, as I can think of a few benefits and drawbacks to each type
Either way we're going to have more people than one server could manage and will have people spilling out into pubs

but is exactly what I'm trying to avoid, tukkake should be able to handle at least 4 servers of either flavour without much trouble, quite possibly more.
Hence me trying to work out how many servers we need.

I'd say go with the 8 player one. Much zombie lols will be had even if it turns out a bit pants, and surely it's better to have as many of us on one server as possible? If you're running more than one we could try both anyway couldn't we?

Still not sure if I'm going to buy it - but I don't see a problem with player controlled zombies.
Of course, if these zombies have bullshit high-damage attacks you're all going to complain about players using them. So maybe AI zombies only would be a better idea :D

Tongue firmly in cheek, of course. Because if another game gets ruined like COD4 did for me I, and numerous other 5punkers I'm sure, will be extremely upset.

I would say maybe run one of each.

Currently, I'm personally inclined towards co-op servers, because I've played a lot of 5punky swat and 5punky jops, and they've been some of the best gaming experiences I've had.
And it just seems to me that due to the nature of versus mode, it could just cause arguments and animosity in 5punk, which are never a good thing.

Fair point.

5punk have always played games against each other though and never had a problem before. I think it's cynical to avoid versus mode on the offchance we can't play nice.

Indeed, but it seems to me like this is different to most games we play, because it is.

None of the zombies have grenade launchers, I doubt versus would get to the point cod4 did. If tukkake can handle it, maybe do one versus and two co-op, or some other combination

I doubt it too, I think (hope) that was just a one off personality clash that we'll see coming before it gets unhappy if it gets that way again. Aside from that, one versus and two co-op sounds good to me.

Maybe 2 of each as a starting point? that's 24 slots and loads of choice.

I'd vote for Co-Op over Humans vs Zombies but it really depends on how good each mode is. It's impossible for us to tell right now really.

2 of each sounds fine, though I doubt we'll get as much players as that. One thing that I learned from Valve games is that they make pretty balanced stuff, and killing other people is always fun.

Might I suggest passworded servers to begin with. I remember when I hosted a DOD:S server about 5 minutes after it was launched and I couldn't even get on my own damn server for random public people trying to join. I suspect L4D is going to be many times more popular than DOD:S.
Personally, I reckon 1 or 2 of both types. They will only take up CPU if there are players on them anyway. I know there are memory issues, but I'd imagine you'll run out of CPU power before memory anyway.

passwords are pretty much a given
all being well, the only bottleneck we'll see will be a drive issue, tukkake is fairly overkill on the cpu/ram front given our pretty limited needs.

I'd password the co-op ones at least since they'll definitely get filled with 5punkers, and assuming people flock to those first the versus servers could end up with free spaces that we might as well let randoms fill up just for the sake of it
