Chipset fans

Well, I mentioned this before that I've had this problem, and the chipset fan on my Asus A8N-E Motherboard just stopped this evening when loading up FC2, and isn't working. I know it may work if I try it again in a bit, but it's clearly on the way out. Berk said before that it's easy to change the fans, but how easy is easy? Is it a case of unscrew old one and attach new one, similar to a CPU fan, or does it involve soldering?
I really can't afford a wholesale upgrade on my PC at the moment, so would need to just get a replacement board if this one is done for. If it comes to that, what's a good replacement?

Basically the same as a CPU fan, but with pushpins, which are moderately annoying.
hell,
http://www.euroalps.eu/technology/Compu ... oling.html describes what to do pretty well, and I'd consider the heatsink they recommend if your 8800 isn't in the way too much.
can be had for under a tenner off ocock.

Cheers for the link. Unfortunately the 8800 would definitely be in the way of chipset fan, but I shall check out the guide.

Absolutely no idea how well it'll cool or fit, but it'll probably work better than the asus one, which is shite

Cunting fucking shit twats.
The replacement Akasa fan is too tall to fit under my 8800, and the motherboard is out of warranty so Asus won't RMA it. I just found
this possible solution, does that sound viable to anyone who knows about these things?
The only
replacement fans I can see are going to be at least £20, plus import tax, and a
whole new board is pushing £50. I can't afford a full upgrade, but resent having to spend £50 on something that for no improvement. Anyone got any suggestions?

On my board the fan was between the graphics and TV card so a cheap 80mm fan could be wedged there, that did me for a good few months, before I could afford a full upgrade. Thankfully most boards now just have mahussive heatsinks instead.

wd40 might work. or it might not.
also wedging a fan somewhere will probably work to some degree.

Any broken ones on ebay you can salvage a fan from?

...
I've just realised, I've got a s939 mobo spare that you can rob if you want?
no idea if it works, but there's a little heatsink on there if nothing else
Also, if that replacement heatsink you got will fit without the fan, it has to be worth a go

Does your 939 mobo have PCI-E for my 8800 too? Cheers Berk.
I'm going to remove the fan from the Akasa one at the weekend and give it a go because I need to transfer a load of stuff from that computer to my laptop, but I'm not sure how it would work when gaming and other things are kicking out more heat too.

Suspend the entire computer in a tank of vegetable oil.

it does, but it might not be great.
once you have the datas off, find out how it works without a fan

or mineral oil, that doesn't go rancid.

Ok.*

I'll have a look. Someone has posted a fan for auction, so I'm going for that, and a couple of cheap boards too.
*No.
