Duplicate Name on the Network

My parents house (where im temporarily living) is having some wierd network issue.

If you boot up whilst another computer is on, you get a message complaining "Duplicate name found on network" or words to that effect. Now, this was apparently happening before i got here, so im ruling out my and the girlfriends machines, leaving the brother in laws and my dads. However, as far as I can tell, they have different names. Anyone know whats going on?

rename one of them, then rename it back.

Rename them all with the same name, that should learn it to winge about proper problems.

In other news.. Have you checked the Name and Workgroup of all the computers? (I assume you have)

Other than the obvious renaming of each machine or changing into a different workgroup name and back again, were any of the machines ghosted/imaged?

If the machines have duplicate SID's then this can sometimes cause weird problems like this, but I would try out the obvious things first such as renaming the machines and workgroup, then changing them back one by one.

Or check for network loops

Get a DHCP server :D

*not very helpful mode*

(Incidentally, I only manage to network my desktop and laptop about one in five tries. That's how good at networking I am)

OK, I blame my dads demonically possesed machine. As soon as I posted about it, the problem disapeared. I swear it does this on purpose.

Other wierd bugs it has had include the mouse pointer disapearing for no apparent reason (it was still there, you just couldnt see it). This happened once, and we could never get it to happen again.

Also, it has a power problem, in that it turns itself off every now and then. And sometimes, it turns itself on without warning. Ive checked that nothing is shorting out, but it still happens. It has been happening for ages, and this is the really wierd part: The machine has been upgraded so much over time that none of the original hardware/software is still there, but the problem remains. Even the *case* has been changed.

Im close to sacraficing chickens over the thing.

Well it was the date 6/6/6 after all, and seeing as it's posessed, that may be why it happened.

I imagine you have changed it too, if none of the original parts are there.. but dodgy power supply?

Worth a try putting a power supply you know works in there and see if it sorts it, because random turning off can't be very fun, I mean you'd lose a load of unsaved data etc.. Worth a try anyway.

nope, power supply has been changed twice. Once for my old one.

To be honest, its not turning off too often, unless its just turned itself on.
which is more mildly scary than actually a problem.

Could be a ghost. Anyone died in your house?

Cover it in salt, and burn it into dust.

You'll only regret it later on when you wake up one day to find your entire family have been slaughtered by it!

Probably, its a fucking old house.

Would also explain the inexplicable creaky noises and the occasionally self-opening wardrobe.

Salt? That's a zombie thing isn't it? A zombie PC would be lovely. Actually, having just had to look into actual zombie computers it probably wouldn't.
