Oddly, the story we ran four months back about EA letting slip that Bioware were working on a Star Wars: Knight of the old Republic MMONG is one that continues to pick up sporadic comments even now. Seems there's a lot of very, very strong feelings about KOTOR, with a lot of people concerned that it moving online means they'll never see another single-player outing or have the various dangling plot-threads resolved. Even without any details whatsoever, there was a lot of spitting, expletive-filled fury about the game's mere existence, much of which we removed in the name of peace, harmony and not having this site be the number one Google hit for "F*CK YOU EA!!!!!!!"

Sounds like we'll soon find out whether folks' fears are justified, as 'orrible UK tabloid The Daily Star has blared that it's off to see the game in San Francisco. Details and screens soon then, hopefully. Will it be Galaxies 2, WoW in space or will a rejuvenated Bioware - going on what we've seen of Dragon Age so far - come up with something new and distinct? In a way I kinda want this to fail because I can't really afford the money or time for an MMO, but KOTOR is awesome and I love it.

Prediction:

It will launch to 500,000 sales.

Reviews will say it's pretty good.

It'll have a few bugs and a moderate amount of quests.

They'll patch some bugs after a few weeks.

80% of the players will say it's not as good as Warcraft/too much like Warcraft and abandon it after a month.

Starting to sound like WAR there, although I am going to push to tier 4 (I broke tier 3 mid-week) just for capital sieges. I wana see that and make up my mind, and I've got 3 weeks to get there before my sub expires and I need to pay moar monies

It's exactly how the last two new MMOs I've played have gone/are going. Looking at the pattern of why people are making their claims I can't see any conventional MMO breaking the trend.

Jumpgate might survive, probably will flop right off the mark because it isn't like Warcraft though.

I didn't truely enjoy eve until I started PVPing, which took months. Hence me holding out and pushing on for keep siege, which from the few player accounts I've heard is pretty good.

I think the reason KOTOR did so well was because it was in the Old Republic universe so that it wasn't filled with all of Lucas' crap infesting the movie's time period.

Also there are lots of Jedi in the old republic universe, so having a bunch won't be so weird.

Which is why a KOTOR setting would be a much better development sandbox for the game, they can pretty much fit nearly anything they want into the universe in that time frame.

They wouldn't have to shoehorn in places like Hoth/Yavin 4/Bespin (Cloud City)/Endor/Coruscant/Dagobah/Kashyyyk/Naboo/Tatooine etc..

Albeit, they wouldn't be able to have a familar location so to speak.

I love the 4-6 time period. It's so much more gritty and dirty. Unfortunately, as you say, they always feel the need to crowbar obvious film references in there and it ruins it for me. Why does everyone always have to be at the Battle of Hoth?

I ran a Star Wars tabletop RPG campaign for years, spanning from just after the Battle of Yavin to some time after the Battle of Endor. The only 'hero' character they ever met was Luke Skywalker, and that's because one of the PCs spent months tracking him down to try to learn to be a Jedi. He was politely turned away. They actually turned up late to the Battle of Endor after a tangle with a supply column en-route. There's such a massive scope for stuff to do outside the boundaries of the film, it's very narrow minded to limit a story to them.

I don't mind film references that are to the right timeline, for example SWG was meant to be between New Hope and ESB. So, when they announced an expansion the community went "Hoth? Bespin?" only to be shot down because they were actually releasing Kashyyk (because Clone Wars had just come out) They did the same when the last one came out too. Fuckers.
