For those looking at getting a new Graphics card on a tight budget, I can Highly recomend a ATI HD4850. I have The ASUS one - EAH4850.

I have this morning overclocked (using the software that came with) mine and although the roumors of high temps are everywhere on the Web I have only seen a 1Deg C temp rise to 57 Deg C.

Runnig CoD4 on Max Graphics and shiney things @ 2048x1536 I can still get 35-40fps.

Get One, money well spent !

Or if you can afford just a little bit extra, get a 4870 for the extra performance and giant-ass fan.

Unfortunately, on a very budget machine, ~£50 more is probably too much extra, especially for the reasonably minimal performance gains.

It's cheaper and shorter than the stock cooler models aswell.

This evenig I have been trawling the net for more info on further Over Clocking.
I downloaded the updated ATI CCC and from this have managed to futher the speeds. Here's the link to that.

I'm pretty sure this is the limit now for this card with the stock cooler.

Now I know the first concern would be the further rise in temp, however, I managed to drop the temps massively with some jiggery pokery to the CCC profile.xml file. See link below, it's dead simple and it works.

It also works for the 4870's. It's completely Ronseal !

Hope this is of use to those of you who have 4870's and working 4850's !!!

The Radeon 3000 and 4000 series lives quite happily at idle over 65°C. With your temps down to 43°C you should be well OK. If you're having issues it may be a bad GPU.

the CCC is one of the things i hate about ATi cards. Ray Adams has got his tray tools working with the 4800 series, though, so I don't ever have to use the CCC again :D

85c is more than safe, especially given it's at full load

What's the noise levels at 85c? My inferior ATi card sounds like its taking off at full load...

That's similar to my 3870. Before I messed with the fan in RivaTuner the fan was inaudible amongst all the background noise, as it stayed at about 25% almost all the time. It doesn't really get loud enough to hear amongst everything else until I get it above 35%, and it's not loud until over 50%.
