Play.com's "Coming Soon" section is usually a good place to look.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter should be out this week, IIRC.

ORLY?

Yes. I have bought it. I rather suspect you noticed this.

I'll play it more when my patience/concentration levels are higher (ie: not on a Friday night).

It's a bit of a cross between Operation Flashpoint and Full Spectrum Warrior, but with BF2-style graphicals (for those who haven't had a go).

As a gamer foremost - I like a bit of realism, but not too much. Yes, I like playing as a soldier, but I don't want to be an actual soldier - I want to be a Super Soldier, a Clint Eastwood or an Arnold Schwarzenegger. They always get the bad guys, and in this game the baddies seem to be getting me, mostly.

That's not to say the change is unwelcome - a bit more sensible behaviour from the NPC participants helps to dissolve some of the game-isms which many bystanders find so ridiculous: enemies don't always "spawn" in the same places, and previously "cleared" areas don't remain free of bad guys, or at least that's how it appears.

In retrospect, it is kind of stupid to talk about how "advanced" enemy AI is, when any tactic they use is easily countered by a second play-through, but the Black-like AI coupled with the inability to quicksave tips the balance a little too far in the computer's favour for my immediate tastes.

I don't doubt the sense of achievement will be greater, having thwarted an intelligence 2.6MHz more powerful than my own, but it remains to be seen whether I maintain the patience to outwit it on my own, or resort to hax, lies and the inevitable videotape. That's the microcosm of Games World - there's no true intelligence, so you're always seeking to "find the trick" to "beat the end of level boss".

So , yes "Wah", "Boo Hoo", "It's too real!" might be my initial reactions, but I think it will grow on me. I'm fairly sure that quite a few other 5punkers will enjoy it, too - not least those who are actual soldiers and bemoan the lack of realism in most FPS games. I think it has co-op multiplayer, too.
:)

This :above: is going to be my next PC game I think.

Does it require an uber l33t PC to run it though :faint:

It definately looks great, and i'm a sucker for realistic war games, in fact does anyone know of any good tactical fps' with a one shot kills kind of realism? i heard Brothers in arms was like this.

Only £25 from play.com, it's tempting. I quite liked the online action when I played it on Duke of Ted's 360. The single player had an overly complicated control system, beef2 control system is about as complicated as I want it to get.

Beef has a bit too many controls for me, i like all my most buttons on the mouse, but sadly you cant get a mouse with more than 5 buttons these days, i did have a 14 button one, but games didn't like the extra 9 buttons

I daresay you have heard of Americas Army, or may have played it, if not, give it a go.

It's a large d/l (800MB+), but it's well supported, entirely free and pretty realistic; one shot kills, timing your breathing for accuracy etc.

However; it is a publicity tool for the US Army, make no mistake. They pay for it, run and support it, if that is likely to stick in your throat then don't bother.

If you haven't tried it I would urge you to do so. It's the best FPS I have ever played by a country mile, perhaps not the most fun, but if you want realism it's as close as can be.

Now, I could go off on my usual tirade about 'realism' in computer games but most people usually choose to misunderstand me totally, so I won't. In a nutshell tho, 'plausible reality' is what most games should aim to achieve in order to avoid being discarded as bonk my the casual gamer.

The very best first person tactical level game IMO is Operation Flashpoint and the sequel Armed Assault due soon (tm). Nothing else quite has the depth, flexibility or is simple plausible enough to keep me enthralled for more than a few 'levels' (grr, the whole concept of levels kill all these games immediately). Then again, if you can't handle the controls in BEEF, you'd be fucked. OPF is actually a bit of a thinking man's game.

One day I might persuade a few 5punkers to have a coop runout on one of my longer missions.

My MX510 has 8 buttons (I think) and the drivers allow you to map all of them in games. To be honest tho - I don't often bother. Things like reload on R and jump on space-bar would just feel wrong if moved. Sheriff Fatman said he has middle button mapped to switching to pistol in beef though, and that seems like a sensible idea, especially when using a shotty or G3!

I understand what you mean, and I try to avoid recommending an FPS as 'realitic' for this exact reason.

AA gets points for feeling more sim-like than FPS: there is no respawn and even the slightest knick causes your aim to be shakey and increasly more difficult to hold true as you bleed out.

As for a co-op on OFP: sign me up :) I only have the original boxed version so I might be limited map and mod wise, but my brother is constanly waxing lyrical about co-op so I'd love to give it a try.

Well i've just plyed the demo of GRAW, and i've got to say i'm very very pleased with it. I can't honestly fault it. I imagine the multiplayer to be like counterstrike except slower and much muc more tactical

AA looks great but for some reason, 60 people fighting over 10 kilometers doesn't seem like great gameplay material.

"Realistic" games can be great practice for aiming and shooting fast, you have to squeeze off that headshot before they do, and you can learn well like this. It'll erode your online playing style completely though.

Pffft, this :above:

Okay, Oblivion's hardly realistic but playing its slow pace for so long then going into a 5punk-speed UT game hurt my brain.

I learned that using UT03/4 and it just made me me dangerous in other games :)

Maybe we should have a thread dedicated to games coming out in the week, i.e. say I post all the games coming out any one can post games they know coming out and I'll tidy it up, then the next week do the same in the same thread..

Thoughts?

Floor it! Floor it hard! And see here, I seem to have made a post about this already, when I was but a virgin 5punker...Everything you need (IMHO) to get up and running in Op F
