Well they've got till July 1st to sort it.
I'd say your chances of playing it on time are pretty high.

The idea of a game where you have to babysit an NPC all the way through doesn't hugely appeal to me. I'll buy a copy in a shop, though.

Steam = $19.95 = £10.844
Shop = £19.99
Play.com = £17.99
Buy it through steam, save yourself the £9 or £7 or so. Unless you only have a Switch card, then you'll be wanting to change banks first.

Yeah Steam is a no brainer, do you think I do anything different to anyone else?, do you think I click the 'spack' button before doing anything with steam?.
Anyway, I was able to pre-load it and it says I'm ready to play on release day... we shall see.

I have a card that says "Solo" on it. I don't know what it means, this has never really been something I've thought about a great deal.
Either way, I'm a bit old fashioned in that I'm not really happy "owning" something quite that intangible. I'd rather have a disk and a box to put it in.

That's fair enough I can understand that point of view, but you're still gonna be paying money for something which doesn't hugely appeal to you

Honestly I have no qualms about purchasing games over steam and similar programs. As long as valve is in business, they'll have their content servers up and serving up my games.

So is this Half Life 2 - Episode 1?
And if so, is it an expansion, or a full game in itself.
And also, why has it got such a stupid fucking name?

It's Valve doing the episodic content thing. It's the first part of a continuation of the HL2 story, after you defeated Breen and will be relatively short. More episodes to follow.
I will be pre-loading once I've reinstalled Windows on my new disk.

They're going for 6-8 hour "episodes" that get released more frequently than normal games do. I believe they're shooting for a 10-12 gap between episodes. Considering it took 6 years to go from HL1 to HL2, that's not too bad. Episode 2 has been in development for quite a while too.

I like the idea of downloadable episodic content, as I don't have time to finish most of the games I own (Quake 4, COD 2 I'm looking at you!) a shorter game like this is more appealing to me as the price reflects the short(er) episodic nature.
I also like the fact that this feels like it will be an extension of the original game (Which I loved!) rather than a standard expansion like Opposing horse and Blue Shift were for HL1 (not that i'm saying they wern't good, I'm just looking forward to a continuation of the HL2 storyline)
This is the way forward!, not charging £6 for material that other games include in patches (Boeuf if you were in any doubt)

I'll still play and play the original over and over again but all new content is always good, very excited indeed! Just need to reconnect the hard drive that the original is installed on...

Meaning valve add a few levels edit some models and textures from HL2 and resell. Waste of monies if you ask me.
