Hey guys. I just got a new Gateway 17" crt, and i have my desktop res at 1280x960 at 70hz. When i goto play a game, the monitor positioning is all fubar (as i run most games at 1024x768) and i really dont want to mess with the positioning. Im running a 6800Ultra, so is there any way i can set something in the nVidia control panel?

Thanks

I thought the positioning was set depending on the resolution, so changing it at 1280 x 960 wouldn't affect 1024 x 768. Anyone confirm or deny this?

I have a Gateway 17" CRT too - the EV700, and am running it on a 6600GT, and also run most games at 1024x768, but have the desktop at 1280 x 1024.

However, I've never had positioning problems, and wouldn't know what to do if I did, so sorry.

Thats the same model as mine. Grrr... Do you think it may be a setting that i have changed in nVidia accidentaly?

I may be misunderstanding your problem, but if the positioning's out at 1024x768 just change it with your monitor controls. It won't affect your desktop settings because they're at a different resolution.

it's likely your refresh rate.

change the resolution on the desktop, set the refresh rate, position the monitor, change to usual res.

start game.

I thought it'd be to do with having your desktop resolution at 1280x960 (Widescreen isn't that?) and then changing to 1024x768 (4:3 usual), If that is your problem, try using 1280x1024 when in your normal desktop mode instead, as your monitor might be your friend then.

Thats a good point - are you sure its 1280x960 you're running at?

if it is, he's doing something very wrong.

are there any widescreen CRT monitors at all?

I think only the fairly large ones (21" +)

Yeah, its 1280x960. Its not widescreen... Is it??? Well anyway, ive managed to sort it out for CS:S after hours of trying... Now for every other game i own. Great.

That is widescreen resolution. You should have it at 1280x1024 if its the same monitor as mine. Anything other than 4:3 is just wrong on it, so that probably what your problem is.

Thanks d00ds. Got it sorted on 1280x1024 and it works perfect now. Thanks :D

Lat, i have to say... This monitor is a beast. I love it. Certainly much better than my 14" RM monitor that i was using before. But a microwave is better than an RM monitor that size.

Hehe, yeah it is. I got mine for free from someone who was just chucking it out. Makes a hell of a difference compared to my old one. However, I now want a 19" one instead!

Anyone got an old CRT they don't want? :)

Quite a few games I have state their max res as 1280x960, rather than 1280x1024, and I always assumed it was taking the toolbar into account or something as it's always looked like 1280x1024 and worked fine on my monitor, which supposedly only supports 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

CRT monitors are, by and large, 4:3. (Widescreen is stated as being 16:9 for television/HD and 16:10 for computer use.)

1280x960 = 4:3 = A good resolution for a monitor that's 4:3
1280x1024 = 5:4 = Not a good resolution for a monitor that's 4:3 as you'll get a slightly distorted image.

Your average 17", 18" and 19" desktop TFT monitors are 1280x1024 (5:4) and you should use that resolution only on those. On a CRT stick to 1280x960 where possible.

While what you say may be mostly fact. I reckon there are differences manufacturer to manufacturer. So use what works for you. (And glances back, what's this? I made the suggestion that fixed it, and NOT berk? *Surprised*)

Well, I can't fault your maths - I'd always assumed 1280x1024 was 4:3 without actually checking.

Maybe pixie has the nub of it though: horses for courses, as 1280x960 looks horribly distorted on my CRT.
