The Pants Question of the Week - Modern Remakes

If you had carte blanche to remake a game with modern graphics/interface/sound, which would it be and what would you add? If you're feeling fruity you can answer the same question with regards to film, TV series, or a modern band covering an old album.
Game: UFO/X-Com. There's loads of old games I'd love to see again, but many just don't turn out to be as good as I remember. X-Com still gets played though, and it's still great. Put both games into one, keep the nice 2D isometric graphics but beef up the resolution and quality, add a more modern interface with mouse-overs, and make it run in XP. Don't change anything else (Cenega, I'm looking at you).
Film: Tricky one, all my favourite old films derive a lot of their character from their age. Maybe the 1950s version of The War of the Worlds, although even that missed out on the rich character of the book's Victorian setting.
TV Series: Battlestar Galactica. I've not seen the new series, but I can't help but feel it can only disappoint me. The original was full of desperate space battles in battered looking ships, and not a CG pixel in sight.

ooh, difficult one this week
Game:Joint Operations, better graphics, better controls, sound could use a slight update, but nothing massive
Film:Leon, in Extremely HD, no other changes (apart from adding the sex scene, kthx)
TV:so many choices, but none seem quite right, V maybe, fix that up a little.

Game:Has to be Deus Ex for me. I love the setting, I love the atmosphere and I love the whole idea of the game (I'm a bit of a cyberpunk fanboi). I know there are a few unofficial updates available for it but to see id overhaul it would make me a very happy bunny.
Film:I honestly can't think of any of my favourites that I would like to see re-made. As Doggers said, they are what they are, and that's why I enjoy them so much. If I had to choose, I probably go for Forbidden Planet. Although, I dare not think what a hash Hollywood might make of it.

Game: Though one, maybe a proper non-broken version of joint ops.
Film: Mad Max. I really love the dark and gritty atmosphere of the original, and i believe a remake is already in the talks, when George Miller isn't too busy making films about bloody dancing penguins. I for one would be very pleased to see the black ford falcon run over punks again. (although a modern version would probably have emos or something)
TV series: No idea, but it would be nice to see another show with lots of ridiculous explosions and gunfire like the A-team. Maybe the A-team then!

I don't know if you're aware of
this but I strongly recommend against attempting to watch it. In fact, forget I mentioned it. It's truly diabolical.

Game:
Super Star Wars for the snes. Not just super, but super. Oh yes.
Just now having a quick trip down memory lane, the game was practically lego star wars, just longer, more true to the (first)film and hella hard. Well I guess that answers my prayer anyway.
Film:
Platoon. An amazingly powerful film, written and directed by some chap based on his own experiences in Vietnam. I think its safe to say that film started a few acting careers, so I would be interested to see if a more experienced crew could tell the story any better. Although Tom Cruises gleaming teeth might spoil the mood somewhat.
Music:
Black betty. There can never be enough covers of this song.

Yeah, that makes me sad.

Game: Had to think hard about this one.
Carrier Command was one of the first great sandbox strategy/action hybrids and it rocked.
Hostile Waters, while a great game in the same vein, lost the sandbox strategy element which made the first so appealing. I'd love to see an update with a full strategy element and in fact went so far as to start designing one a few years ago. Never really got anywhere though.

It's a shame we don't have software developers amongst us, surely we'd have a few hits on our hands?

Game: Shenmue. Even on the Dreamcast I still find it engaging, a remake - or even better a third installment on new technology would be awesome.
Film: I don't usually like remakes myself and while I don't enjoy them I suppose it's kind of good that people who don't watch foreign films get to see great stories like the Ring and Dark Water, so I'd add The Tale of Two Sisters to that list.
TV Series: A live action version of Pokémon. Actually really any live-action or CG modern realisation of a cartoon series, while they have mostly been disappointing so far, I still always watch them. Perhaps a bit of Hong Kong Phooey.

We should recruit some so that we can horse your ideas upon them and make the games that have been discussed recently. Or maybe you could try and sell your ideas to a game studio somewhere, that might buy you a house on civvy street!

If only it were that simple. Problem is the internet is full of people who think they have great ideas (probably including us), so why would professional software developers listen. Much as I'd like to make money in the games industry, there's no chance of it happening so I'd be happy just to see some original ideas like the ones I suggested.

Well, naturally our ideas are great. Ever tried to at least open up a dialogue with developers?

No, but if any of our budding designers want to steal my ideas feel free. Just send me a free copy of the games they're used in

amblin wrote:TV Series: The original Star Trek. Slap me silly and call me a heretic, but that series really needs updated sets, graphics and sound. I don't mean recast and reshoot, that'd be wrong, but a Lucas-esque special edition with proper monsters and stuff would be nice. Just magic-select all the actors and bluescreen the rest entirely.
That's already been done, to a degree -

I agree, it was the best of the series - the last game where I could effectively make war and conquer. I think there's an Alpha Centauri 2 coming out which goes back to the series' roots.

I'm a bit of a bore I'm afraid; I wouldn't want any of my favourites remaking.
Potentially Missile Defence, however.

I'd love to see Deus Ex with fantastic modern graphics, voice acting and animation. I hope Deus Ex 3 is good :C
