Sky+ and my phone line

I'm considering signing up to Sky, with the + box, and reading through the terms and conditions I noticed it needs to be connected to a phone line for a year.
Firstly, does anyone know why?
Secondly, will it affect my fairly limited bandwidth?
Feel free to chuck in any other anecdotes about the thing too, I'm a Sky noob.

Both those seem to be about whether it's needed or not. If they want me to connect it I will, if it affects my connection I won't buy it in the first place.
Seems to be that it just sits there acknowledging to Sky that it's still there for the most part. If that's the case and it's just sporadic handshakes then it shouldn't impact bandwidth.
Anyone use it who can confirm this?

As far as I know, that's correct, it shouldn't hurt bandwidth, however, if you still have the connection drop when phone call issue, that might get annoying.

Good point. That only seems to happen now if it rings for a long time, so it should be okay. Hopefully.
If not, I've always got the cooling off period, or I could just unplug the fucker and see what happens.

If you unplug the telephone from a normal sky box (not a plus) it just behaves the same for about 2 or 3 months, then it says "OI PLUG ME IN OR I NOT WORK".

I'd be going for Sky+, that way I can ditch the VCR (which I've never bothered getting to work properly with the new TV anyway). I wasn't planning on leaving it unplugged though, only if it was disconnecting me and pissing me off, which isn't that likely. I've not gone for it yet, but it's sat in my browser waiting.

We've got sky plus, it is very good, we've never had any problems with the phone line, although we've just gone past our 12 months so I think I'll unplug it anyway.
Mostly it's used for interactive stuff, or if you use pay per view movies/sport but it also dials out every now and again for a few seconds to say hello to Sky HQ

Even better if it dials out, shouldn't affect me at all. I ordered it for thursday with Sky+ (I've heard nothing but good about that).

It's really just business gayness. In Hungary, you cannot go to another company for ADSL service if you had ADSL service in the past three months. This is enforced by the only phone service company in the fucking country because they have monopoly above it and they seem to believe they have the right to be motherfucking cunts... Errr actually, they do... But that's not the point.

Sounds like us with BT to some extent. But with more profanity.
