8800 cunts!

the shop where i just ordered my computer parts has happily informed me that the 8800 i ordered cannot be delivered, i suspect because they're dutch and do not like us Belgians much. Anyway, this means i have to search for a replacement. The one i ordered was the Club3D GeForce 8800GT,512MB, GDDR3, PCI Express x16, and now i'm looking for something equally good, preferably in the same price range (if possible) my mate suggested this one
http://azerty.nl/8-160-68110/geforce-8800gts-.html
But since i'll be stuffing two cards into it, it might become a bit expensive...
What are your thoughts?
Rest of the PC if you need it;
Intel Core 2 Duo,E8400, Socket 775, Boxed
MSI P7N SLI Platinum
Antec TruePower Trio, 650 Watt, Retail
Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5,2048MB, DDR2, PC6400, 800MHz, 1x (again 2)
Scythe Mugen “Infinity”.
Sony-NEC AD-7191S Black
Antec Three Hundred
cheers!

You're behind a generation
The best mid range choice at the moment would be an ATI Radeon HD 4850 but that may change to the Nvidia Geforce 9800GTX+ next month depending on what price it ends up being. The 4850 will be faster than the 8800GTS.
If you want even faster than that then the ATI Radeon HD 4870 offers Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 kind of performance for less moneys. Nvidias high end stuff is a waste of time at its current prices.

What Lee said really.
I
think 9600(something) =~8800GT or there abouts, so that could be an option too.
But, if it was me, I'd not do SLI immediately.
I'd buy the fastest GPU you can afford - if you need an upgrade in a year or so, chances are they'll cost much less, and give you an considerable performance boost. But that's just how I do stuff

cheers for the advice, but keep in mind that my mobo doesn't support crossfire or SLI.

Yeah, the 4850 is cheaper on that site too:
http://azerty.nl/8-165-81000/eah4850-htdi-512mb.html
Also, the 9600GT is a tad bit slower than an 8800GT, about on par with my 3870.

this is what happens if you misquote your mate's words. He mentioned that crossfire was ATI's SLI, and my brain didn't understand.

If really want to do SLI then I'd put up with your current graphics card for another month and wait for the 9800GTX+. It's slightly faster than the ATI 4850 and quite alot faster than the 8800GTS but should end up round about the same price.

Don't worry about Crossfire or SLI anyways, they're overrated.

Kinda.
They're pretty shite in new, high end builds, way too much money for the performance gains.
However, if you say built a machine with a top end graphics card, 12-18 months down the line, it's likely you'd be able to pick a second card up for very little, which'd give you a 50-70% performance boost for fairly cheap. (by no means certain though, due to some cards just getting replaced quickly)

Right, reviews have properly dropped for the 48x0s now.
Looks like the 4850 just has the edge on a 9800GTX.
If you want a card now I'd pick up a 4850.

I'd avoid the double graphics card route unless you can get them massively cheaper than a solid single-card solution.
You have twice the failure domain, a greater likelihood of in-game glitches, higher power and cable requirement, more heat so more cooling needed, less flexibility in your case with where you can put hard drives and the killer for me would be no multi-monitor support.

4850 it is then. All i need now is another mobo.
cheers!

You shouldn't need one unless you're intent on going for crossfire. (which is really not a great idea)

This, I like the idea of sli/crossfire but the reality of it to me is that like FJ said it's more stuff to go wrong. Stick with that mobo, buy a 4850 and be happy. Ifin a year or so it comes to another upgrade tiem and you think you need moar gpu goodness then the price drops will be enough that a mobo and another 4850 would probably cost less than a 4850 now.

I've been hearing bad things about SLI/Crossfire these past few days aswell. Supposedly they both suffer from something called microstuttering where you get constant stutters lasting a few milliseconds because of the cards not being in sync properly or something.
ATI have completely redesigned their bridge for the 4 series to try to get rid of this problem but I haven't heard anything about whether that worked yet.

My SLI rig works fine. I haven't noticed anything weird at all in the last four months.
