or the approach I took was that I don't know these type of games too well so I went middle of the road; a knight with some magic abilities, ie. I'll avoid getting stuck if something requires either magic or brute horse. If you see what I mean. Plus I'm not too great at sneaking and better at charging right at the enemy so knight is a good option for my playing style. You get to choose more than just class though so it's a bit more complicated but gives you more freedom of choice.

Having played for a bit I've seen there's lots of chances to sneak/steal and various levels of evilness so I reckon even I could get on with being a thief or something if I start another game. It all depends how you want to play the game ...

Well the path I've taken is a bit at odds with my character selection, infact the bloke in the dungeons was probably right all along - but at least I have some cool spells and can fight a bit to back me up if I get caught a-sneakin' and a-stealin'.

I finally made it to L2 regardless, and although there's a mod which raises your level regardless of min/maj skills, as Sticky Label said in the other thread, having a lower level is benficial on the main quest, so I'm not bothered.

In short, you can almost pick anything, and play however you like - I'm not really interested in keeping my character consistent from a roleplay perspective, or in maxxing my stats with race/class/profession bonuses, I just do whatever looks like fun at the time.

Did notice on the consistency front, though that I didn't have a dog at the Skingrad cottage. Probably for the best, being a cat and all.

I have an odd feeling that the dog turned up after I'd installed it, because I'm sure it wasn't there first time I went in!

My Majik Ninja guy is coming along nicely now - got a good range of destruction spells, which are backed up by good restoration, blade, block and heavy armour skills. I'm able to fight either from a distance or up close with weapons rather effectively. I really like the fact you can cast spells whilst holding a weapon, it was the main thing that put me off magic-based charaters in Morrowind since it was either/or, not both. I also like the fact that some spells have an area effect so you can hit 2 or 3 people at once with them. Its a little annoying if someone fighting on your side is too close to them, but thats their problem really!

As for your profession Bob, its up to you entirely. If you want to be more of a knight type character, go for knight type skills etc etc. They don't mean that you can then only be a knight, but it just gives you a big advantage in the beginning for those particular skills.

I'd say go for a combination of Fighting and Magic skills, it will be easier for you to start off and you can get a taste of what you like early on, then later you can specialise or try something different like sneaking and stealth, or continue to be a general character, which is pretty much what i'm doing becuase I've enjoyed every aspect so far!

Big shiny swords are always best for newbies, and you'll find that anything else can play like a support class. Unless your sneaky character is really good, like mine, and can literally walk straight past most enemies without being seen.
