Problems

Hello
I'm having a bit of a shocker.
For a while now my PC has sounded like it's about to take off whenever I use - the fans whir and buzz like no one's business.
Today I decided to open up my PC and take a look at the fan. There are two of them in there and I have no idea which one does what. The biggest has Intel on the front, and the side of the PC has a vent/cone which fits over the top of it to draw air in. I unclipped this on and had a look at it - to my untrained eye it looked fine. It did however take me about half an hour to fit back into place.
The smaller fan is housed in what looks like a little silver cube, and has MSI written on the front - this is the one that is making a funny noise. I've not done anything with it as it doesn't appear to have any easy to use clips to unattach it (unlike the bigger fan).
The real problems began when I re-started my PC. If I go into play a game (e.g. City of Villains), it lasts 5 mins before the entire PC switches off. I had assumed that it was automatically switching off as it had overheated but I've done nothing to adjust the fans, and I've also got the side of the PC open with another fan pointing in blowing cool air on it.
So, anyone have any ideas on why it's suddenly doing this (and what the difference in the fans is)?

the bigger fan is your processor, the smaller is the northbridge (which lets your processor talk to the rest of the puter parts)
try putting your computer on it's side (motherboard down)
if it's a heatsink issue, it'll help a little.
most likely i expect you've dislodged the heatsink on your cpu a little, which is making it overheat.
try re-seating the cpu heasink again, make sure it's flat and level and the right way around and suchlike

you won't be.
computers are very low voltage and low current these days.
it's not like old AT psus that used a mains switch.

That's normal
the fanspeed is controlled by the card, until the card initiates, it just gets full voltage to stop the card cooking itself

I good quick fix that might reduce the noise of your fans a little; get the hoover out. Make sure you don't transfer any static your hoover might build up into your PC inards though, it's unlikely but to be on the safe side don't touch the inards whilst you're holding the hoover.

A quick blow can do the same thing as it's usually better focussed and more powerful than the hoover.
There are spraycans of compressed air that do this, but you can do it with your mouth - just make sure your gob is not full of crisps or saliva and close your eyes first.

Are we still talking about computers here?

The applications of "FatherJack's Blowing Guide

at the risk of getting back on topic, this stuffs good and can be used for pretty much anything pc related (keyboards mobo's cpu heatsinks etc) and can be found for around 7quid at places like staples pissy world and even WHsmith

We use loads of the things, mainly to turn them upside down and freeze things. Like each other.

If that's what it's like in the army, I shudder to think at what goes on in the navy.
