Firefox memory usage

Now, I'm running FF 2.0.0.14, one thing I've noticed is that my system gets sluggish after about 5/6 hours, and task manager is reporting to me that FF is using around 600meg, evidently FF sucking up all the memory (not cpu mind you).

I've kept an eye on it, it's roughly going up by 100mb every 1-1.5 hours, even with only an empty tab open.

Anyone else get/had that?

Seems a bit excessive for a program which is just idling in the background, not to mention it generally crashes as I close it once it's above the 500mb mark.

I don't have that, so it makes me think it is something you've got, which I've not.

I'd disable all plugins and see if it still does it. Then add them in one by one, or in small groups to narrow down which one may be causing it.

Any other modifications like perhaps skins could also be at fault.

I've noticed that if I open multiple tabs firefox takes up more memory (obviously) but then when I close all tabs except one, the memory usage doesn't seem to go back down properly, so after a few hours of browsing it can get a bit greedy

sounds like a broke plugin to me, FF usually doesn't break 250meg, IME.

:above: what plugins are you using?

also, it's not a bad idea to just close your browser every once in a while...

*grumble grumble, dreamhosts ate my post*

Enabled:
Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4
NoScript 1.6.8

Disabled:
AVG Safe Search 8.0
IE Tab 1.3.3

The enabled ones should be exactly the same as what some of you are using, which is why it's puzzling me, I'm not overly bothered as I'm only going to be using this PC for another week or 2 before it gets stripped down, upgraded and formatted, but it's the principle.

NoScript is shit. It breaks so many sites and is so fucking annoying.

I'd get rid of it if I were you.

This is the list of extensions I'm currently using:

Adblock Plus
DownThemAll!
Fission
ForecastFox
Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer
Greasemonkey
IE Tab
Image Zoom
Linkification
Long Titles
PicLens
Restart Firefox
StumbleUpon
Torbutton
Undo Closed Tabs Button

Firefox has only used up about 5MB or so in the last hour or so.

NoScript isn't shit, it's pretty good imo, and for breaking sites, that's the whole point, scripted items don't happen unless you let them.

I'll give that a go for disabling next though.

BUT, I wouldn't put it past Windows having issues with memory management, this installation's a bit flakey.

Unless you're going to hundreds of shady warez pages there isn't any need for noscript in my opinion. it's like having Fista's UAC except instead of just for settings and admin-level things, it's there for everything. more annoyance than it's worth if you ask me.
