Pro-belm 1: RAM

I have three problems with my comp, which I will post separately, as they are probably unrelated.

1. RAM

Every time I boot, my BIOS insists I can acheive better performance by inserting my RAM in pairs - dual-channel if you will. However all my RAM is identical, and I've tried inserting it into every orifice in every combination - it still boots up as single channel.

Resolution? Live with it, having to press F4 every restart. I patched the BIOS when I set it up last year, so there may be updates. It's P4 2.6 w 2700 RAM, can't recall the mobo without restarting.

find out the mobo, rtfm.

usually it requires memory to be in the same colour slots, or in different colour slots. :) :)

It's an intel 865, and R'ing TFM states that the (identically-coloured) slots are numerated A0, A1, B0, B1.

I have four sticks of 2700 512MB RAM, the two I bought a few months back are in A0 and B0, the two I bought last week are in A1 and B1.

I'm not that bothered if it's single or dual-channel, I just wish the POST would stop whinging about it every time I boot ;)

Does it run in dual channel with only two sticks in? My mobo refuses to run in dual channel if i have all 4 slots filled, so i cant have my old 2x256mb sticks in if i want my new 2x512mb ones to run in dual channel.

No it never ran in dual-channel wherever I put the original 2x512M sticks.

Edit: It's an 865GLC and still showing the OEM's logo at boot, so there's likely an update.

flash the bios? maybe a newer one will fix the issue.

Just had a look, current one BF86510A.86A.0075.P24 seems to be the latest :(

Will try re-flashing it, anyway.

Nope, it's the newest. Won't let me update as it's "identical".
