So I nuked my system over the weekend after playing the demo of Company of Heroes, buying said game to find out that it locks up my pc after the map loads. So I got a bit pissed and repartitioned my drives heh.

So when my system was still borked I was running a very old copy of notron's interweb security bundle and now it's gone. So my question is.. is windows firewall enough? Shall I buy/sweep a real security suite? Which would you recommend? I'm thinking of actually buying a real antivirus program since avgfree was acting funny torwards the end too. Looking through past threads it seems NOD32 would be the way to go for the AV, is the rest of the NOD suite any good?

Nod is good. (except in command and conquer) But if you want free then I'd recommend AVG, Avast or AntiVir. I'd linky them and other useful stuff like spybot S&D and a² as a dedicated trojan blocker/remover but I'm lazy so just go to this page instead.

I wouldn't be too worried about a firewall if you're using a router, just use the windows one.

nod32 is probably the only AV that 5punk can agree on, so i'd use that.

NOD32 did cause me a problem once, but it was my fault for configuring it wrong. I think it was Beef that wouldn't work and I eventually remembered I'd messed about with the Internet felcher the day before.

BTW There's a newer version (version 3) available which doesn't install when you update automatically. It's got some new features.

thanks for the tips, I downloaded a trial of NOD32 to try out. Seems to be good so far.

The reformatting really helped out my system. For shits and giggles I threw in the 1950pro I bought and never got to work when the pc was bare and it seems to work now. I just have to wait for Steam to download my games to see how it runs stuff. I should have backed up all my games first but in the heat of the moment it was not on my mind. I did get audiosurf to run last night and found more options then I've seen before so that's a good sign. Rust colored track ftw.
