Warhammer 40K MMO in development

Interview with developers/Games Workshop.
http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6166560.html
Doesn't really reveal a lot, but just the idea opens up some questions that might get some thread-time for discussion.
On the PCG forum where I found this a couple of points were made that were quite good. What I'd most like to see answered is how they would balance the game and keep variety? Everyone would one to play a Space Marine or Chaos Marine or suchlike, but to keep the game in line with 40k canon they shouldn't really be able to. Conversely, if people could, but could also play Imperial Guard/Chaos Cultists/Eldar how would it balance out when one marine could take on a dozen more regular troops? A progression system wouldn't really work either - as far as I remember Space Marines are trained from birth so it isn't like you could become one at level X. Orks would probably work.
Someone suggested a squad-based MMO, which is different and could work. From what I saw in the interview though they both seemed to be hinting that it was going to be yet another World of
Whatevercraft.

I'm guessing it's practically going to be the fantasy MMO they're doing, but with spaceships and guns.

Maybe, although they're by different developers and in the interview they say there shouldn't be a crossover. However, if they both turn out to be Identi-MMONGs then it's unavoidable.

It's only a minor thing, but mid way though they mention 2 DOW expansions. There's been 3.
Further more, Woo! MMO with Tau (I hope)

Erugh.
Personally I don't see how you can balance this unless something like all players play as the Imperium of Man (so Space Marines in various forms, whether it be Adeptus Astartes, or one of the other sets (I suspect they'd be end game classes or something, as Gray Knights for example are meant to be all round better than normal marines, and the Emperors body guard chapter are meant to be best of the best).
Imperial Guardsmen wouldn't work as they're vasty inferior to marines, so NPC for them, bonus is that no human controlled tanks or anything.
Pretty much any Alien race can be NPC's, with probably the option to play Chaos given to players wishing to play the villian.
Dunno, could be good, could be bad, depends what they include.

40k MMO? meh. Difficult to balance. (Chaos)Marines would have it too easy unless adeptus astartes/ Traitor Legion was a 'prestige' class (Like SWG with jedis used to be). Playable Grey Knights? No. that would be slightly overpowered. Terminators with thunderhammer and stormshield? slightly overpowerd in hand to hand. Terminators with cyclone launcher and assault cannon? oh god no.
The desktop game is balanced in that the guard/orks get roughly 3 times the numbers that space marines/eldar/chaos marines get (Other Chaos, Necron and tyrannids can GTFO!). That won't happen in an MMO.
Now if there was an MMO version of necromunda....or Inquisitor...or Battlefleet Gothic..
!!!!!!
OMFG! Titan legions! need an MMO version of that ASAP!

Necromunda was possibly (maybe Blood Bowl) the best GW game I played. I had a beautiful Orlock gang, all conversions and painted by me, and run like a military squad. I destroyed anyone I came across. Then my mate borrowed the game and lost everything but the rules book. Including my gang. I do think I got some of the other guys' gangs off him though (which I also painted). I'll see if I can find them.

As far as the DoW games go, I liked the skeletons with the moving pyramids and the insta-building dark eldar in the new one, but have no idea how they could translate that many classes to an MMO, especially since they all seem to be everyone else's enemy. I'd have like to seen the Tyrannids appear, if only because they look so different. I bet none of those will be in it, though.

I am master of beards, do you not know this?
Although in this case I'm a recovering beard. I've not played that manner of beardage for many years.

Me also.
I would like to see a squad based tactical MMO, that would be highly win. Wont happen though, as for some irritating reason everyone seems to equate MMO with RPG.

Inquisitor would be all kinds of win. I got back into warhammer playing mordheim and then they released inquisitor which was sooo much back story and big models for ultra detailed painting and I fell over and wept salty man tears from my penis it was so good.
I'd quite like a 40k mmong, but the very act of balancing the units would remove any sense of it being 40k and it would fail. So unless they find a way round that it's just not worth it.

buzzmong wrote:...Emperors body guard chapter...
The adeptus custodes would have to be npc super powered types because they are individually almost as strong/fast/tough as primarchs and where also created by the emperor using his own gene seed. Back story says that their leader Constantine Valor was capable of sparring at full speed with the emperor and beat Dorn, Russ and Horus in their sparring sessions.

Which is why like I said, normal Space Marines are about as far as you can go, due to the special ones being stupidly more powerful (in fiction)
