Hmm, nearly there

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

So, my remaining server parts will arive tommorow, I've got a 6 month Windows server trial files downloaded and ready to be burnt to disk and I'm reading through as much documentation for said OS as I can lay my hands on, but I though I'd ask a couple more question here before I finish:

Is it actually going to be fairly easy to install and configure the OS as a means of sharing the internet connect and a local file-hosting server?

I've got visions in my head of it being just like XP, but I'm fairly sure it won't be that easy and simple. Or am I wrong?

If you've ever used Windows 2000, then Windows Server is pretty close to it (graphically/menus I mean)

To be honest you should be able to setup everything through the "Manage My Server" thingamyjig which pops up on startup, and can be accessed via the Start Menu.

It's basically a built in wizard for the most common tasks you need in setting up and administering a server.

The local file hosting should be a piece of piss, as for the sharing internet connection gubbins, it's nto something I have ever done, as the proxy server here at work remains pretty much unchanged.

Remember to give the server a simple enough name, as you will be typing it out quite a bit on all the machines that connect to it :)

Shouldn't be hard. I'll call it Bob, or Noris or something.

I'm running ICS on WinXP. There's a little tick box on the NIC settings that allows you to share t'internet. Problem with XP is that it's integrated into the Firewall, so I'm stuck with that. And when said Firewall goes tits up, I get no ICS. As happened recently and led to the full reinstall. Server may be different though.

As for names, planets and trees always work well :)

But then she'll think he's got a girlfriend called Eve and definitely take a peak. She'd be right, too. ;)

i have the solution to the pron problem on my "beep beep reversing" :P server.

when you share a directory, after the share name put the $ sign
so like share pron$
this will hide it from being listed in the directory. meaning nobody can find it unless they type in the address.

presto - accessable yet hidden pr0n! :boogie:

Ok, let me rephrase this:

I'm not interested in having p04n on my server. If I were, I#'d hav it on my personal comp. More over, I'm not interested in p04n. Now leave the p04n thing alone. God you ask a simple question...

However that tip about the $ thing. cheers for that. it'll prove useful in ensuring that no-ones goes fiddling about in the program files folder :)

ok, here's an od one. Had it years ago, but I can't remeber how I solved it.

The hard drive is detected fine in the BIOS, but I can find it in windows to format the damn thing. Tried removing it form the device manager and then scaning for new hardware, and just doing a straight up scan for new hardware from the control panel, but I can get the unformatted drive to appear in the my computer screen so I can format it. Help?

EDIT: I checked the jmper setting before I pluged it in, and set it to cable select, just incase.

ok then, given you're really fucking weird about the porn thing, i will point out that there is absolutely no need, EVER to hide the program files folder.

instead you should consider using shares properly (ideally for another drive or partition) and only having folders that need sharing shared.

also, ISTR you'll be using this machine as a router too, in which case it's gonna be a target, so you should be sure to have simple (given family usage), but non obvious passwords on all accounts. and ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT HAVE THE PROGRAM FILES FOLDER SHARED.
