WoW Killer Would Cost A Billion [MMOCraft]
Think you've got an idea for an MMONG that could completely kick World of Warcraft's ass? Well Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has some words of discouragement for you. According to the big boss, even attempting to take on WoW would set you back anywhere between $500 million and $1 billion dollars, and even once you've scraped together the cash there's still a chance you'd fail.

"We don't think that even if we made the USD 500 million or billion-dollar investment to get a product out [to compete with WOW] that we would even be successful doing it," he said.

Kotick points to the massive amount of cash that has already gone into the development of failed MMO product, doubting that even a company as well-managed as Activision would have a chance at making a profit in the sector. If you can't beat them, join them, eh Bobby? So is that it? Is World of Warcraft the de facto king of MMOs, never to be dethroned?

All MMOs sucks, it's just that some of them suck less.

I'm pretty sure you could get a wow killer for less than $1b.

I don't expect an infiltration team would cost $1b to find the main character servers and destroy all the HDD's and backups.

That'll kill wow rather quickly.

I dunno, the heist made quite a big news item in the 'mainstream' gaming press. Tis how i started playing after i read about it in a PCG, a looooong time ago.

Although I still had to think hard about what you were on about.

I figured I'd go for something mainstream-ish, because if I said pulling a remedial or running an EIB even less of you would get it...

Remedial was Goonswarms CEO. When he left he took the 40 bil titan funds with him

EIB was the biggest scam in history. The guy who pulled it off reportedly snaged over 700b in isk and assets, although other sources say it wasn't anywhere near that.

Main difference being that both Remedial and EIB weren't premeditated but started as legitimate enterprises that broke down. GHSC set out from the start to be a heist, which IMO makes it much cooler.

EIB was about half that figure. There was 700bill in the bank at peak, but they'd paid almost half of it out by the time he got fed up and decided to prove the naysayers right.

Back on topic - after hitting 70 on W.o.W and joining a good raiding guild, the game got a whole lot more challenging and interesting. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
