I did bought a Tempest

Since I finally got all the skills I've talked about before, I bought a Tempest and fit it out with this, from the Wiki:

Highs: 6 X 1400mm Howitzer II, <strike>2 X Large Remote Armour Repairers</strike>, Salvager and Cloak (prob should have been a Tractor Beam, but I find it hard to shake the habit). Loaded with mixture of Nuclear, Fusion, Quake and Tremor.

Mids: 3 X Sensor Booster II, 1 X Tracking Computer II, 1 X 100mn Microwarpdrive I

Lows: 3 X Gyrostabilizer II, <strike>1 X Tracking Enhancer II, 2 X Reactor Control I or</strike> 2 X Tracking Enhancer II, 1 X Reactor Control II, Warp Control System thingy that stops jamming

I know this fit is for a fleet sniper, so needs a few mods for PVE, and I took it out into high sec (0.8 ) to try it out.

Since the rats there are all frigs though, I couldn't hit them at all - they just closed on me and pecked away at my shield. I had some Hammerhead I's which were able to kill them, but it was a bit worrying for a while - if I'd chosen to go to a lower sec area to try it out where the rats scramble you, without drones or the anti-jammer, it could have been rather embarrassing. Not massively damaging, as I got it for less than the insurance payback, but humiliating.

Obviously a BS is overkill for the lvl2 missions I've previously been doing, but with all things in Eve I like to start easy and build up once I (kind of) know what I'm doing.

So what am I doing wrong? Should I be using smaller guns for frigs, or can BS's never hit them at all? Should I build up my drone skills to use tech IIs? All of this from the BS to the large guns/artillery is completely new to me, biggest I've flown before is a BC with mediums, but I've had most flight-time in a stealth bomber.

I'm sure it's on the wiki, but here's my PVE set-up

6 X 1400mm Artillery, 2 X Cruise Missile Launchers
1 X large shield booster T2, 3 X T2 hardeners, 1 X Boost Amp
3 X T2 Gyros, 2 X T2 tracking enhancers, 1 X RCU
5 X T2 Mediums, 5 X T2 lights

Cloak and Warp Core Stabs both kill lock time and range these days. Leave them off.

Tempest is fairly unique amongst bs in that it can both shield tank or armour tank pretty well (but not both at the same time!). For PvE (Missions) I'd go for a shield tank (no need for tackling mods in the mid slots, generally soak up more dps and leaves your lows free for damage mods).

In other words, pretty much what Hehulk posted though for Level 2 missions I'd be inclined to used heavy / heavy assault missile launchers and/or smaller guns cos you'll be facing frigs and cruisers mostly. Then again, your drones can deal with them so why waste ammo. T1 drones are fine too.

Ah, I wondered why they kept targeting me first even with all my sensory-boostery stuff. Still, it's scary not having WCS :S

Ok - the last line of that fit are drones, then? Looks like that's what I need to train up next. Thanks, guys.

Also, like you said, tempest is complete and utter overkill for lv2 missions. You'd probably find you'd actually do them faster in something like a cyclone, which if you can T2 fit a tempest you can definatly T2 fit a cyclone. Same goes for lv3s, but lv4s a tempest, maelstrom or command ships would be your best bet

Yeah, I don't really do missions very much. My money's all from ratting randomly with a few lucky drops and salvage, plus the odd bit of trade and stock marketing with my alt (who's now blockade-runner capable).

Bit of a pita that the WCS nerfs your targeting, since I tend to drift around rather aimlessly, it's saved me a few times from people camping gates and stuff. Perhaps with a BS I can gain a bit of confidence and not always be legging it at the first hint of danger, and since it cost massively less than I had planned for to buy and fit I wouldn't be too devastated if I had a little accident in it.
