Time to upgrade my computer too. I want to take your suggestions on this now as I'm buying it in January. Total price should be around 228 pounds.
What I need is:
- New mobo
- Compatible at least dualcore CPU
- Compatible videocard which is better than an ATI Radeon X1600.
- 1 GB DDR2 RAM

Cheapest:
Mobo:Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (~£65)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 (£50)
Memory:GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Or OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 (~£40)
(total ~£155)
Leaves you with about £75 to play with for graphics, which with some shopping around will probably get you a 7900GT or GS.

How much are Radeon HD 3850's going for over there? That'd be much better than a 7900.

in the uk the very cheapest is £95.
I'd recommend spending the extra, but if it's not possible, a 7900 is still a damn good card.

A little extra is fine. Is it worth getting (well it's pretty much obvious but I'll still still ask it) a higher E-number CPU if I can afford it? (say... E2180 instead of E2160)

yes, but as cpus are always getting cheaper and faster, if you have to skimp, i'd skimp on the cpu and replace it later.

Well, if my old, easily overheating AMD Athlon XP 2800+ is compatible with the new mobo, then yes indeed, I can afford to wait.

That I thought.
I'll see what I can do about it. *wanders off to bank*

I'm upgrading from a 3800 because it's far too slow. The 3Gb of ram may well make it nice and fast, but the whole system is bottlenecking my 8800 cupcake card. I'd say wait, and I'll send you my athlon, but if you can afford the change to c2d, do it, because, well, just because.
E-numbers are always good, my personal favourite would be E110, sunset yellow, although E445 is always good for shits and giggles.

Pffft. E102, E174 and E175 for the win.

I like E666 (Satan-Acetate) and E404 (Page-Not-Found-Alginate)
