just wondering if anyone knows whether its pissobile to give bandwidth priority to different apps, given I have set up the ftp server, and have various other bits running such as remote desktop, and the ability to stream music,, but whenever I do any of these things, I have to adjust the speeds for different apps.
Thanks

Quick google returns this -

The bandwidth Fista and the crysnet bandwidth manager look like they might do the job. I'd still wait for Berk to rouse from his few hours of passed out on potato moonshine, or for JamandKnees to turn up, he's probably got some sort of handy thingy/doodah* that will let you do it with a nice gui interface.
*Both technical terms.

if you know what ports the application is using you can set up your router with QoS to give those priority.

There's a useful tool for Windows that lets you set QoS bits and bandwidth limits which I use on my ISA Server box. Unfortunately I don't recall the name offhand, but it's freeware made by a Japanese guy and it's somewhat finicky to set up.
