TL;DR: Jeff Gerstmann give Kane & Lynch a 6.0/10 and says some mean things about the game. Eidos threatens to pull ad money from Gamespot. Gamespot fires Gerstmann.

I'll never trust a Gamespot review then. I only listen to you lot and PCG anyway though (PCG incidentally gave said game something in the 60%s I think).

:above:  It's still got that message up. I guess every time they re-open them, they get spammed with hate messages again.

Also, I wrote that I thought kane and lynch was like quadriplegics in a bath of treacle, 5punk isn't going to fire me is it? :P

maybe cover you in treacle and do bad things to you (although the term bad is relative I suppose) but that's about it!

Only if we lose an Eidos advertising contract.

This really proves that Gamespot reviews are biased by the amount of ad money paid...

By the way:

Oh noes, I'll never trust a review from a site that runs adverts again! Er..hang on a minute.

I kind of assumed this bullshit went on, and that either the reviewer was naive or stupid to bite the hand that so obviously feeds - when you join an outfit like that you leave your integrity at the door.

Still, it wasn't exactly a scathing review or a totally crap score, and I despise the practice and what Eidos and GameSpot have done. I won't even take a lunch invite off suppliers of goods I use at work, and I don't want the divided loyalty of having adverts on 5punk. If I made a game though, you would all have to say it was ace.

:above: metacritic is your friend!

I personally never trust just one review. It goes:

one review < many reviews < friend's review < personal playtest

Looks like I missed all the fun, I wanted to login and say "niggers". I understand that's what people do when trolling.

/edit
And this game is fairly crap, I tried it. Looks like a last gen game as well.

Metacritic is also run by CNet. I don't want to trust it.

Thing is though metacritic links to all the original reviews it uses to get scores (including referencing magazine reviews with page numbers etc). I feel you're pretty safe unless they're all in league with each other in some gargantuan pan-media review conspiracy. You'll note that although I put faith in metacritic, I'd rather have a (capable) friend review it, then play it myself if possible, then buy it.

EDIT

You'll notice also, that gamespot doesn't carry the same disclaimer (that I can see) in the about us section that metacritic do:
Metacritic wrote: Metacritic, through CNET, does sell advertising space throughout the site, but at no time do we allow advertisers to dictate any content (or scores) that you see on the site. Advertising sales are handled by CNET representatives, and are kept completely separate from the editorial staff.
Interesting...
