RTS

Post by Dog Pants »

Thinking about a subject for a new thread to appease the almighty WEY, I came up with this to pose:

Why do very few 5punkers play real-time strategies, and (as far as I remember) nobody posts about them?

Personally I don't play them because I'm crap at them, although I do like turn based (Combat Mission, X-Com and hopefully Civ 4).

I don't play them anymore because they've gotten to complex for me these days. if we could go back to the days fo C&C I'd probably play more.

also shooters have more eye candy, which I desire muchly.

and I suck at strategy. all I can do is tank rush, lol...

you also suck at CSS

I never could play them because it's too much too quick for my poor brain, turn based is as far as I can go :?

I do play RTS's's's's.
When I suggested/schedualed some games I got very little response though. Hoping to see a little more of it at the LAN though, could be fun cursing and swearing at each other as our abses get slowly devoured.

I really can't do them - something just doesn't click correctly in my head. I've got Warcraft, Seven Kingdoms, Ground Control and Lords of the Belm, er..Realm. I can do the first few levels, but then they just go to a place where I cannot follow - my brain cannot formulate any strategies to combat the enemies' new tricks.
I rather enjoy the 1 or 2 levels of the games that I am able to complete, but I really might as well have just played a 2-level demo of those games above.

Console ones are different, though. They are easier (well they must be, as I can do them). Even completed Kessen II. The newer Kessen and Crusaders games haven't got me stumped just yet, and Dragon horse on the Saturn was one of my all-time favourite games!

How wierd. Ive just made a post elsewhere about RTS's.

Two points I would like to make:

1)Who cares if you're shit? Also, from what I can make out, we all seem to be a bit rubbish. So surely we are all well matched? And if we try it once or twice and you get utterly trounced, what have you lost? I think we should give it a go and see

2)Its ultimately cheap, due to the fact that there are tools out there to fool your computer into thinking that you are playing a LAN game, when you are in fact playing over teh interweb. Meaning that floorware versions will work fine (largely).

So now, on to the games.

As I have mentioned before, I love Warcraft 3 (although im really quite rubbish at it against real people), quite enjoyed Dawn of War (not tried it online, but willing to give it a go) and C&C generals was enjoyable (although I invariably lost when I used to play it in halls at uni).

Im reasonably certain that all the above are floorware-online capable.

I am very shit, but then I've never let that stop me with any other game genre, I just have to shake the vague feeling that losing to the computer means I'm stupid.

I'd give it one go at least, given a bit of warning to setup the tools, relearn what buttons to press and find the games on the floor. I mean that literally - they are somewhere in the pile behind my chair.

It's not the fact that I'm crap that stops me playing them, it's the fact that I don't enjoy most of them because I'm crap. That said, I do like some and I'd be up for a game of anything I've got (Total Annihilation anyone?).

I enjoy them immensly, but when playing against the computer I need to play on relatively low difficulty settings, or I get creamed.

I tried WC3 online once, and the guy I was playing against utterly destroyed me, embarrasingly quickly. Thats why im so keen to get you guys playing. I might be able to beat some of you

well it's not that I don't want to play because I suck, it's that I don't buy RTSs because I suck.

However, if anyone wants to get a game of Age of Empire 2 going I'd love to join in...

I play Warhammer 40K: Dawn Of War, mainly because Skirmishes are the piss-easiest things to win.

Total Annihilation! THIS.

I was planning a post on asking what games actually count as RTS?.. Because I've enjoyed many *Different* strategy games in my time.. Eg. Sims series (Before sims 2.. damn commies. Simcity included), Rome-total war (I got a lovely floorware version but forgot to keep it after my PC did a fuck0r), Total Annihilation (Quite possibly one of my favourite LAN games of all time.. ), Oh.. age of empires 2, and this is the one I wanted to question.. Football manager games? They take lots of strategy.. maybe?.. no? (I love them too much, its a sin.. (Fatherjack, managed to get FM2006 working floorwared. :boogie: ))

I'm not a fan of RTS's myself (apart from Populous on the Mega Drive  ) but it would be nice to bring a new gaming element to 5punk, and I hope you all can give it a go, and if it proves popular, then all well and good :)

:above: This! Even on the hard setting, still quite smashable with some land raiders and a few squads of terminators.

Also, C&C Generals eh? Can we play zero hour? I prefere the airforce general, not the standard ones.....
