Multiplayer Call of Duty 2 picks up right where the original left off, offering standard deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture-the-flag modes, along with the search-and-destroy mode from the original game, where one team has to plant a bomb and destroy one of two objectives while the other team defends. A mode called "headquarters" is also available, and it's probably the most enjoyable mode of the five available in COD2. In this mode, two different areas on a map are designated as capture points for either of the two teams. To score points, a team must control and set up a headquarters on one of the two areas. Once that's set up, points begin increasing for the controlling team. The other team must attempt to overrun the position to try to stop the points from ticking up. During the time a headquarters is set up, the defending team members can't respawn (if they're killed) until their headquarters is overrun or the HQ expires. Once one of those two things happens, capture points are changed to different locations and the teams begin anew to try to set up a base. The nature of capturing, defending, and a constantly shifting HQ location makes this mode fun, because teams must adapt to different roles quickly and on the fly. As far as weapon balance goes, there's a predictable relationship between bolt-action rifles, semiautomatic rifles, assault rifles, and submachine guns. The smoke grenades can also change battlefield dynamics greatly, as snipers can sometimes find their favorite killing fields obscured. The shotguns are also extremely powerful in close-quarters situations, and they're fun to use.
Mmmmmmm shotguns, and an even better sounding Headquarters mode!
TDM will always be a classic, but I can see myself getting into HQ a lot more in COD2

Unfortunately most 5punkers don't ever want to play anything other than TDM.
Don't get me wrong, I love TDM, but I'd really like to play more HQ & Domination modes on a Tuesday night.
I tried to get a mixture of game modes going a while back in the map rotation, but a few people got a bit pissy and kept asking to change the map/mode all the time, so I gave up. :ignore:

Oh well, COD2 may change everybody's mind

New HQ sounds interesting.. I don't mind the odd game in UO but after a few rounds I can get the same effect from Spectator Mode..

Fuck.. so there is.
Also- they have a spectacular name.

edit: Just tried the one at Codfiles.com (popup hell)- works well. Apparently the feature is already in COD2, it's just switched off.. same with the original CoD.

I'm quite happy to play other game modes if they work with the amount of people we have. I remember some HQ games on Ship and Hurtgen that I quite enjoyed.

Also, woo to 'nade cookage! It's an essential part of the game. Now all we need is some ninja climbing, a bath and an AIDS cannon and we're sorted.

Wow. This looks great. Only thing I noticed was that in the IGN review it said nades couldn't be cooked...hmm?

Any places to get this cheap? In my quick search play.com was £26.99, £1 cheaper than amazon.

:above: HQ sounds rather like the battlefield 1942 / vietnam etc style of play in were the more flags you hold the more points decrease for the other side. sounds cool i wiill probably get this if i can run on my specs as they are now as i enjoyed the demo alot :likesitall:

Oddly enough I enjoyed the to-and-fro of BF1942, but didn't think it worked very well in BFV. I'd like to see a mode in COD/COD2 where the objective is to push back the enemy spawn points across the map until a 'last stand' at the end. Perhaps timed like UT's assault maps. The most enjoyable TD games seem to work like that.
